The 2010 WEGs are just around the corner! There are eight events in this years Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games, and for the first time ever they will be held in America, in Kentucky Horse Park, Kentucky! Here's and overview of this years events:
Dressage
Each horse and rider perform the same test, a combonation of movements and gaits, designed to demonstrate how calm, supple, loose, flexible, confedent, attentive and keen a horse is and how well it interacts with it's rider.
Driving
A team of four horses must compete in three different competitions of driving, drivien dressage, marathon, and obstacle cone driving. In driven dressage, a team(of horses) is judged on freedom, regularity of paces, harmony, impulsion, suppleness, lightness, ease of movement, and correct bending of the horse on the movements. The competitors are judged on style, accuracy, and general control over their horses, as well as dress, condition of harness/ vehicle, and presentation of entire turnout. The marathon portion of the driving competition requires the driver to drive across country to test the fitness, stamina, and trianing of the horses, and testing the driver for skill, judgement of pace, and general horsemanship. The course is divided into three sections, and the final section contains 8 marked obstacles. If a competitor exceeds the time limit on the course, they will be given penalties. The final driving competition is obstacle cone driving. This is to test the fitness, obediance, and suppleness of the horses after the marathon and to test the skill and competence of the drivers. The driver has to drive his team through a twisting course of cones set close together with balls set on top. If a team goes off course, knocks off a ball or goes over the allowed time, they will recieve penaties. The team with the least amount of penalties from each competition wins the driving event.
Endurance
The Endurance Ride test the speed and endurance ability of a horse. Competitors must know the pace and efficent and safe use of their horse. The competitiors must ride over a distance of 100 miles with at least 5 stops for a vet to check the condition of the horse and determine if a horse is fit enough to continue. The winner is the competitor who finishes the race with the shortest time.
Eventing
Eventing is an all around test of a horse and rider. They must compete in three different events on three different days, in which the rider must ride the same horse for all three days. The first day/test is Dressage. (see rules under Dressage above) Which is followed by Cross. Cross-Country is a timed test where a horse and rider must jump over a series of solid jumps set in a natural setting. The jumps can include jumps into water, up and down banks, over ditches, and over large timbers. On the final day, the horse and rider compete in the Jumping event. Jumping takes place in a large stadium or arena and the competitors must jump over jumps made of colored poles, brush and, gates. The test is time and designed to show the horses willingness to contiue after the previous days exertion.
Jumping
A horse and rider are tested under various conditions over an obstacle course. It's made to show off a horses freedom, energy, skill, speed, and obediance in jumping as well as it's riders horsemanship. The competitors receive penalties for going over time limits, knocking down a pole, or refusing to jump an obstacle. The horse and rider with the least amount of penalties will be the winner.
Para Dressage
Dressage offered to those riders with physical disabilities. Gives the disabled a high performance equestrian sport along side with able bodied riders. For the first time in history, Para Dressage will be included in the 2010 World Equestrian Games. This allows the riders to represent their country despite their disabilities.
Reining
An event designed to show the ability of a western horse in the arena. In this event, the competitors must run one of several approved patterns. Each pattern includes small slow circles, large fast circles, flying lead changes, roll backs, 360 degree spins done in place, back ups, and exciting sliding stops which have made reining famous.
Vaulting
A cometitive discipline where gymnastics and dance are combined and performed to music on a cantering horse. It requires a harmonious relationship between horse and vaulter, and outstanding physical condition from the vaulter. This is important if a vaulter is to display strangth, cordination, rhythm, and balance. This event is fun for the spectators as the riders of all ages perform routines, as a group or alone, of artistic mounts and dismounts, shoulder stands and handstands on the horse, carrying or lifting another vaulter, kneeling and standing exercises. All vaulting competitions are held over two rounds of freestyle and compulsory test. During Compulsory Tests vaulters must perform seven designated exercises that are scored on a scale from 1 to 10. Freestyle tests, performed to music, allow vaulters the freedom of building an artistic performance. Each vaulter, pair or team creates their own routine to music of their choice. Judging is based on technique, form, difficulty, balance, security and consideration of the horse. Today, horse, longeur and vaulter are considered a competitive unit and the performance of each is reflected in the final score. Vaulters most important teammate, the horse, must be a consummate athlete with good character, temperament and balance being essential as 20% of the overall score comes from his way of going. The horse is guided on a longe line by a longeur, standing on the ground, who ensures that a steady, true, canter is maintained on a circle with a minimum diameter of 15m while the vaulter performs.
Now that you know the disciplines, you're ready for the Games!

Yes, NBC should be airing it. They normally air all Equestrian Events. They will also have all the video on a media player, so you can watch it when ever you want on your computer.
I'm going to WEG for 3 days. My friend is a vet and has been asked to go for Vet Checks on XC, so I will be tagging along. I went to Rolex this Spring and it was awesome. The course looked amazing, there was one combination that was ridiculous, but hopefully the WEG course runs smoother.
