Each week I will be giving some advice on how to trail ride safely. Whether you ride English or Western doesn't matter, this is the place for all riders to learn how to safely trail ride.
The subject of this week is going to be riding on the roadside. First of all, never ride a horse on the roadside unless you are absolutely sure it has no fear at all of traffic. Walk your horse around a vehicle. Does he/she shy away? Is he/she at all nervous around traffic? Next you should gather your gear. You should have: a reflective jacket or other piece of clothing, helmet, cell phone or walkie talkie (in case of emergencies), and proper riding tack. Then, if possible, ask a friend to come with you. This way if one horse spooks, a rider is thrown, etc. there is another person who can get help. The next thing you (and your friend) should consider is which road you will be riding on. It is not a good idea to go on a highway or other highly-populated road. Pick a road (preferably a gravel or dirt one) with very few vehicles on it.
Congratulations, you are now ready to safely trail ride on the roadside. Have fun! |
