On November 11, 2010, I was out of school, and we headed straight for the barn after a few errands. I was excited to be able to get on Chip. I had finally gotten a better fitting helmet and we got a new gullet for my Bates saddle. I grabbed Chip from the paddock and tacked him up within 30 minutes. I soon headed down to the arena.
My trainer was down there helping another girl, but the horse had turned up lame, and didn’t need to be ridden. I had the arena to myself! I soon finished warming Chip up and then popped over a few 2-foot verticals. Chip was moving so gracefully and quietly over the jumps. We did a few more lines, and I soon headed over to my dad on the bleachers.
Chip’s favorite place to go is the bleachers. It provides a bunch of shade and we can relax for a few minutes. I relaxed my body and took my feet out of the stirrups. Chip began to play with my dad’s shoe. It felt so great outside. Then, a few minutes later, some ladies from our barn were heading out on a trail, and another lady followed behind them with a golf cart. I didn’t think one thing about it.
Chip heard the golf cart and was startled. He began to some sidestepping. All I could hold onto was a rein and I was starting to slip. Chip then began to freak out about the reins becoming tighter, so he threw his head up. I finally let go. I saw Chip’s hooves pricking up and down because I landed in the worst place, underneath him. I saw a hoof coming down and Chip saw me in his eyes, and picked the foot up so it wouldn’t land on me. Chip started to trot away and I immediately shot up and began to follow him. His reins were dangling around his neck, so I needed to make it over to him fairly quickly.
I stopped dead in my tracks when I saw him walking towards me.
When he made it up to me, I began to cry. This was the first time in years he had come up to me without me having to walk up to him. My dad asked me if I was okay, and I just cried more and more. I was so proud of my buddy, and even though I had come off, I was happier that he did it.
After that, I got back on him. I headed straight for the arena. I did my course, and he was perfect in every way. I hugged his neck after he was done. I was happy, and it felt so good to see the bond I have with him. I learned two things that day. Even though I had fallen off, I wouldn’t have liked it any other way, and that Chip really cares for me through the thick and thin. |

This is really cool! What a great bond you have with him. What is it called, it's like something bad happened for something good. I am glad you did not get hurt, at least not too badly. Chip is very cute. And this is a wonderful article!

After watching your video, it seems like you have a good position, but you are riding very negatively at the fences, and almost seem to stop before you jump the fence. If it wasn't for Chip enjoying his job I don't think you'd be so lucky.
Good article though- I love Chip's colouring and the fact that he came up to you after the accident.
