In Chinese zoos they do some terrible things, but a form of abuse you may not have heard of is lions riding horses for entertainment. In this particular exhibit, an adult lion is trained to climb onto a waiting horse which then jogs about the ring while the bravest, cruelest man in all of China frightens them by cracking his whip. Yes, in Chinese zoos there is a man whose sole duty is to make sudden movements and loud noises in order to frighten the horse-mounted lion and horse.
The lion is declawed and has it's teeth removed so that the horse isn't physicaly hurt, but the horse is still frightened into submission. Also, the lion weighs 250 kg, pretty heavy for a horse of this size to carry.
This is all done for entertainment. How entertaining do you find it?

this is sooo cruel! the dog & cat meat market as well as animal skinning in China is also absulutely horrible, that horse will be traumatised for the rest of its life, not only that but it could develop back problems and look how worn down its hooves are!!!!! these people are horrible and shameful and should be the one that the lion is riding!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! they make me soooooo angry!

I'd say ABUSE. I don't find it entertaining at all!!
I certainly wouldn't pay good money to see that. In fact, I'd pay good money to try and stop it!!

this, oh god, is one of the cruelest things i have ever seen!! the poor lion is declawed and has teeth removed, that already is inhumane. how does it eat??? and it must have a lot of difficulty trying to cling onto the horses back without claws
now to the horse
*has trouble breathing*
this poor horse!!!! 250kg on its back and its expected to move with it! probably gonna die by the age of 10 from sever back problems...
this is sad. why does it always end up some asian country that do alot of these cruel things??
nice explanatory article :)

Aww! That's so sad! I think it should be illegal. At least they declawed and teethless, but still!

Definitely abuse!
I can see how the picture of a lion riding a horse could be found entertaining however the way they go about it is definitely wrong. I doubt the horse could support a full grown lion on its back for regular periods of time without developing some serious problems, just because the weight on its back.
And trying to scare the horse in running around? Sheesh! I'd definitely think the audience would like the show much better if the two animals were perfectly coordinated and trained. This sounds like a raggedy show you'd find in some illegal's backyard, just trying to make a couple of bucks.
I believe the whole concept could be pulled off in a humane way, with the proper training and equipment. But the circumstances you described? No way.

Thats so wrong! Not only is the horse having to carry the heavy weight, but BOTH animals are being frightened! The poor lion has had its claws and teeth taken away-How can a lion eat without teeth? It cannot!
I SAY ABUSE! For the horse and the lion!

I would say this is abuse, the lion is far too heavy which makes the development of back problems in the horse used extremely likely, the horse is terrified due to the fact that it's head and nose are up on the air and the whites of the eyes showing, it's on concrete which puts extreme strains on the horses joints, wears down the hooves and can cause the soles to bruise in some cases and well, lions are a strong, aggressive predator and no amount of training is going to change the fact that he could drag the horse to the ground.
However, I don't believe it is fair on the lion either. He is de-clawed and his teeth removed which could result in him not being about to eat the meats that he would naturally consume in the wild (and knowing the Chinese he was probably still awake or very lightly sedated during this process and probably not given pain killers, but that might not be true) Also, he is 'trained' (again the methods bmay/b not have been humane) to jump on his preys back but not k

Even though I think its wrong and abuse, most zoo's in China are poor, and the only way they can stand out and make enough money to survive is if they do something as evil as this. I'm not saying that this isn't cruel, but please spare some sympathy for the owners, who are obviously struggling to survive.

Ah I remember this. I always found it to be extremely abusive and cruel. But it's not just Chinese zoo's that are at fault. American entertainment shows are no better in this regard. Asking elephants to stand on their head, making tigers jump through rings of fire, having horses stand on eachothers back. But I find all markets that exploit animals to be inherently cruel -- Seaworld keeping Orca's in tiny aquariums (tiny, compared to the size of the Orca) FEI and Equestrian sports making harsh bits and training mandatory to be "the best," slaughter markets (in general) US and foreign rodeos (in general,) the fact that guided hunting and seal clubbing is "legal" you get where I'm going with this.
I always did find it interesting how the same people who find horse slaughter cruel, won't give up eating cheeseburgers. *chuckle*
But I digress. The fact that people still pay to see something like this, still shocks me.

I sound mean, but this is not the cruelest things ive seen. What about dog fighting? Horse fighting? Animals actually are killed during every match, or the loser (if not dead) killed right after the match.
Yes it's bad, but is it worse then what people in other countries are doing?

This is defiantly abuse!!!!!!! THIS SHOULD BE BANNED!!!!!!! The lion can still kill the horse and both animals can get seriously injured!!!!!!! The lion is DECLAWED AND has his teeth TAKEN OUT!!!!!!! The horse will get seriously injured by carrying this 250 LB. lion his/her back (I don't like calling animals "it's, I think it is very rood!) This horse can get back injuries!!!!!!! Both of them can get injured BAD because they both can get scared and injure them selfs or injure EACH OTHER!!!!!!! I mean I have seen small dogs ride horses, but that isn't even bad, but this is sick, cruel, and INHUMANE!!!!!!!
