It may sound silly, but horses can wear socks, and many should!
But these aren’t just any socks, like your gym socks or those grubby old ones with the holes that you just won’t throw away. These socks provide support for the delicate structures of your horse’s lower leg, and help with circulation. Whinny warmers (whinnywarmers.com) have developed a stretchy, comfortable sock for horses, that fits from just above the hoof to as far up the leg as you need – usually just below or just above the knee or hock.
For horses with chronic conditions like arthritis, which have difficulty moving but who really need to maintain their circulation to reduce inflammation in the lower leg, the whinny warmers are ideal. They provide just enough compression and warmth to aid circulation, without constricting natural movement. Horses that train hard and then stay stabled, like competition sport horses and racehorses, can use the socks to prevent stocking up after hard workouts.
For horses with sweet itch, the summer-weight socks can provide additional protection from biting flies. In fact, most horses would enjoy the protection from flies that the summer socks offer. Flies can do more than just irritate your horse the constant stomping on hard ground to shake off flies can be very damaging to your horse’s hooves, and expose their delicate lower legs to unnecessary impact and the risk of injury. With the socks, you can replace several bottles of expensive and toxic fly sprays and repellents over the summer, and keep your horse comfortable and promote good joint health and circulation at the same time – just remember to take them off before you go riding!
The whinny warmers have some added benefits too. If you are trying to keep a bandage in place over an injury, the whinny warmers are much easier to apply than wraps, and more secure than boots. If you live in a cold winter climate, and use stable bandages for warmth, the winter socks are much faster to put on and take off, won’t risk coming unraveled overnight and tangling up around your horse’s legs, and are easy to wash and keep clean. Of course, if you show your horses and they have white legs, the socks are a great way to easily keep your horse’s legs clean too! |

Never heard of them either. Wondering if they would hold up to mud, and help prevent scratches... unlikely, but it might be worth a shot.
