Hurricane Preparedness for Horses
|
|
This isn't the typical review that you're used to seeing from me, but given the fact that we're right in the middle of storm season, it seems more relevant than some of the other topics that were in the hopper. Horse owners have a special responsibility because unlike cats and dogs, you can't take your horses with you to a shelter or hotel. If you're planning to evacuate altogether, it's even more of an issue.
Having gone through four hurricanes with horses, I understand all too well the difficulties and the planning that's required and would like to share a couple of excellent resources available to help you get ready in case a big one comes your direction.
The University of Florida IFAS has an excellent tips sheet available in PDF form at:
http://brevard.ifas.ufl.edu/hot_topics/PDF/Hurricane_Preparedness_for_Horses.pdf
The information is good but much of it is preemptive. They will, however, address topics that you may not have thought of if you haven't experienced a major storm before.
In addition to the tips that you'll find within the UF article, there are also some really fabulous and suggestions that can be found at the floridahorse website. Because disaster brings out the best in some people and the worst in others, you need to be cautious and this article also discusses ways to do that.
http://www.floridahorse.com/hurricane/hurricane.html
Whether you decide to leave your horses inside or out, you need to follow the advice in these articles because it's better to be safe than sorry. Hurricanes are no joke. They're wild and exciting but they also require proper preparation because they can be lethal. Make a checklist of the items suggested in these articles and post it in the barn so that it's always readily available both to you and to your boarders, if you have any. You can never prepare for every eventuality, but by doing the best that you can, your chances of coming through the storm with healthy, safe horses is greatly increased. |

Tomorrow I am leaving Florida... :( I was just in vacation, but I caught a little bit of the hurricane: just storm with thunders and lightning... not a big deal. I never caught a hurricane, but my grandparents that live in Florida... they did. Very good advice, but sadly... I don't own a horse... YET! Nice and usefull article.

One of the pitfalls of living in Florida is that sometimes we get hurricanes. What we don't get are blizzards! I'll take a hurricane every 10 years or so. Plus, I'm 15 minutes from the beach, so that's a big plus. :0)
