It had been six months since I had met the Harris’. I went to the farm every day to visit Sym. The problem was that as much as I tried to stay away from Mac he found me every time. I hadn’t talked to him very much. Figuring that would be best. But it seemed that he tried to seek me out and talk to me. When was I going to tell him why I didn’t want to talk to him? I didn’t know. He still remembered exactly what I said about Sym and he knew I really meant it about me. That was the problem, that he constantly tried to show me that he cared and never wanted me to be alone. I just didn’t want to be around him because I was afraid. Afraid of loosing him.
Mom and dad just fought like usual. They were never home together. Dad was always gone and mom was always in her room. I hated it. I was so lonely sometimes that I stayed at the Harris’ for breakfast lunch and dinner. But I was silent there too. It was best to be silent sometimes, because silence is golden. Sym and I were getting more and more attached, he followed me everywhere and was getting used to Mac. As I was. He still didn’t want to be around Mac. As did I. Biting my lip I walked down the old driveway to the Harris’. Though I was walking slowly my heart was beating quickly. I always loved to see Sym and it excited me every time I got near him. I could already smell the sweet smell of the horses. It tickled my nose and I smiled. Sym made my life calm, and made me feel like I was worth something. My eyes narrowed when I arrived at the house and Mac stood on the porch with a little fluffy ball in his arms. So they got a puppy? Or was it a cat? I couldn’t tell from here. Mac stepped off the porch and I made a beeline for Sym’s pasture. I didn’t want to talk to Mac or look at his new puppy. Yes, it was a puppy I could see it clearly from where I was.
“Pilot!” Mac’s voice caused my footsteps to falter and I stopped in my tracks.
Turning around I looked back at Mac. “Yes Mac?” I asked softly. Abruptly he walked up to me and didn’t say anything. Instead he shoved the little German Sheppard pup at me. The puppy whined softly and snuggled into my arms. I looked down at the animal before looking back up at Mac. Eyes questioning what was going on.
“He’s for you.” Mac said simply, his hands planted firmly in his pockets.
A small smile tugged at my lips. And I looked back down at the puppy. “It-”
“He.” Mac corrected me.
“He, is so cute.” I said softly and ran my hand over the puppy’s soft silky coat. My puppy’s silky coat. My smile grew larger and I looked back up at Mac. “Thank you.” I whispered, still slightly in shock.
“Whatcha gonna name him?” Mac asked me curiously.
“Antrick.” I replied, not at all knowing what it meant, but it was somewhat like ‘Antic’. “I’ll call him Ant.”
Mac smiled and reached out to scratch Ant’s head. “You’re welcome Pilot.” He replied before ruffling my hair.
I shook my head and kissed the puppy’s little nose then set him down on the ground.
He was absolutely adorable and I hoped he would be loyal like Antic was. Antrick, and Antic. My boys. Biting my lip slightly I then turned to go over to where Sym was. I didn’t want to get attached. Remember? I had to keep reminding myself that I didn’t want to love Mac. I didn’t want to be friends with him. That was a bad idea. Very, very bad. When I arrived at Sym’s pasture Ant was on my heels. Whining with every step. “Oh hush.” I scolded the little pup before sliding between the fence rails.
“Sym!” I called loudly, my voice carrying to the chestnut horse’s ears. His ears flickered and he threw his head in the air before turning to look at me. When he saw me he tossed his head and then came charging toward me. I scooped Ant up into my arms, being sure that Sym wouldn’t run him over. Smiling when I heard Sym’s hoof beats growing closer I reached out to stroke his face once he was close enough.
“Hello love.” I cooed softly before letting him check Ant out. First Sym sniffed curiously at Ant before snorting and tossing his head. I smirked and reached up to stroke Sym’s neck. He was a good horse that was for sure. Glancing around for Mac I then set Ant on the other side of the fence. “Stay.” I said firmly, for all I knew the pup would actually stay on that side of the fence. Taking a handful of Sym’s mane I bit my lip before carefully raising myself off the ground. Sym pranced nervously and I ran my free hand down his back, “Easy boy.” I cooed soothingly hoping it would calm him. When he relaxed I slowly pulled myself up and swung my leg over his back. When my bottom sat slightly on his back I couldn’t help smiling. His muscles tensed but relaxed again when I murmured sweet nothingness to the stallion. “Atta boy.” I whispered and glanced back over to see Ant curled up in a little ball, sleeping by the fence. I closed my eyes for a moment and enjoyed the warmth Sym’s large body gave off. Laying out I rested on his neck and wrapped my arms around it tightly. Before I could say anything Sym began to move slowly. Just walking. It didn’t seem like he cared that I was reclining on his back. I was glad he didn’t care, glad he trusted me.
When I sat back up a gentle breeze played with my amber hair and I breathed in the fresh air. It was like magic, this horse and I were connected. I slid my hands down to his shoulders and patted them gently before closing my eyes again. I hadn’t been on a horse in so long. It felt so familiar, so good. Not wanting to ever get off I leaned down again and wrapped my arms around Sym’s thick neck. He was absolutely perfect to me. This was one of the first times I actually felt like I could take on the whole world. I felt as if I was sitting on top of the world, it was an astonishing feeling. Suddenly Sym tensed, I squeezed my legs tightly around his barrel but that didn’t hold me on. Sym’s back end raised into the air and he bucked wildly. Before I knew it I was laying flat on my back. The wind was knocked out of me and I felt as if I couldn’t breathe. As I groped for oxygen and clawed fiercely at the ground all I could see was black spots floating around. Darkness threatened to take over my world. I heard a pair of feet running towards me and someone yelling. I made the voice out as Mr. Harris. The feet coming towards me I couldn’t tell who it was. Deep inside I prayed it was Mac. I needed it to be Mac, to lift me up off the ground. When I dared myself to open my eyes it was who I hoped it would be. Mac knelt down beside me and carefully sat me up.
“Are you okay Pilot?” He asked rather alarmed.
I still gasped for air and shook my head. Why could I still not breathe? Clutching my arms to my lungs I stared at Mac with wide eyes.
“Breathe, Pilot, breathe.” He cooed as he lifted me up off the ground.
My lungs burned and I knew it was from falling flat on my back. Finally after a few more seconds I let out a long breath. With another gasp I looked around frantically for Sym. Then back up at Mac. It was his fault that had happened, Sym would have been fine if Mac hadn’t bothered us. Mac always knows when to come at the worst times.
“You’re such an idiot!” I hissed angrily.
Mac’s eyebrows furrowed and he raised an eyebrow at me. “I’m the idiot?” He asked running his tongue over his teeth, his tone annoyed. “I was just about to say that about you.”
“You should know not to come near when I’m with Sym!” I replied nostrils flaring. I struggled away from him even though I was still in his arms. “Put me down!” I demanded and shoved my hands against his chest.
“Well I’m sorry I came to make sure you were okay,” He said shaking his head, “You are the one that complained about having no one to care about you!”
I bit back tears. I hadn’t cried in front of anyone in so long, it had to have been five years since I cried in public. I certainly would not cry. But he was right, I had been the one that stated no one cared about me. Mac shifted before letting me onto my feet. “Be careful,” He told me sharply before walking away swiftly.
I looked at the ground and let out a soft sigh. If I hadn’t been so stupid and annoying, and plain old mean to him maybe he wouldn’t have walked away angry.
Shaking my head I walked back over to the fence and leaned down to pick up Ant. I watched Mac walk back into the house before I bit my lip stubbornly. This was going to take a while. |
