Horse Photo Manipulating Tips
|
|
PonyBox is the whole reason I starting manipulating. I may not be good as some of the other players on here, but I think I am at that stage where I can give out some pointers/tips that I have learned throughout my year of manipulating.
Tip #1: Your Program
If you don't want to spend hundreds of dollars on an editing software, GIMP is the way to go! GIMP is a free manipulation software that you can download. It is easy to use, and has amazing features! If you don't want to download anything, there are some wonderful editing websites out there that you can use. But I must warn you, an online website may not be as good as GIMP or any other editing software's that you have to download. If you really want to get better at manipulating, I would suggest downloading or buying an editing software.
Tip #2: Mastering the Art
If you want to master the art of manipulating, I suggest looking at some tutorials that are made by an experienced manipulator. Another thing that you can do is go around PonyBox, DeviantArt, or any other website and ask your peers for some tips. If you really want to be self-taught, I say all you need to do is get familiar with your editing program, practice a lot, and try new techniques.
Tip #3: Precuts
Personally, I would stay away from precuts. So if you need to work on your cutting stay away from precuts, I repeat, stay AWAY from precuts! If you use precuts you will not get better on your cutting skill. Also, stay away from premade precuts. Premade precuts is a precut that is already smudged, the mane and tail are already drawn in, etc. I personally hate premade precuts because you are not getting any better at detailing your horse.
Tip #4: Cutting
Now, I am going to talk about cutting. Cutting is VERY important. If you have sloppy cutting, it will ruin your whole picture. Now, if you are cutting, stay AWAY from that nasty old eraser tool. If you do use the eraser tool, all you are asking for is sloppy cutting. I know some of you don't have the choice but to use the eraser tool, but if you have GIMP, there is an amazing tool called the "Path tool." Check out some GIMP cutting tutorials for neat cutting with this wonderful tool.
Tip #5: Picking out your Stock
Now for the last tip of the day! Picking out your stock. Finding the right stock image can be very frustrating. Picking your stock image also may take you a long time! If you can't find the stock image that you want the biggest thing to do is compromise! You have to know that there isn't always the stock image that you want. Now, another big thing is that you have to know what you are looking for. What breed do you want, what position do you want the horse to be, what coat color would you like? A good stock image is crisp and clear in quality. Do not use a blurry or low quality stock image. Low quality stock images are hard to work with. If you do not know what a stock image is message a mod, manipulator, or look it up on your search engine.
I really hope that my advice helps you! If you have any questions just message me! I won't bite! Happy manipulating!

These are great tips!
Some of the best cutting is done by hand. There are no shortcuts to perfection. I am just fine with the eraser tool.

I usually use the eraser tool, and people on Morgan (graphic makers) were jealous of my cutting abilities. LOL. It was always so smooth.
I use the lasso tool mostly now, with some help from the eraser, :3 it's much faster.

Erasing tool can be easier than the lasso. The lasso can make you cutting look choppy.
You used to always use Pre-Cuts aswell.

Although GIMP is definitely better for digital paintings, I find Sumo Paint a lot better for manips, as it has the auto-curve setting which GIMP lacks.
Otherwise though, I agree with your points (: Nice article.

I prefer the eraser. It works a lot better for me, and doesn't look as choppy as when I use the path tool. And you can't tell me that I'm lying judging from my album, because those aren't my actual manips.

I use the free-select tool on Gimp to cut and I LOVE IT! It looks like a lasso.
