Recently my friends and I had a barn sleepover. Naturally, we woke up very early and in record time we had fed the horses, groomed them all to a silky shine, mucked out all the stalls, refilled all the water troughs, recentered the saddles on their racks, and cleaned up the stable.
Then we were bored.
I know, bored in a barn? How? But when you aren’t allowed to ride until an adult is awake, your choices are limited. Naturally, my friends and I did the thing we do best next to ride horses.
We plotted an adventure of our own.
About an hour later thoughts continued to go through our head, but we were getting no where. Then I glanced across the field and saw Mozart and Jasmine and an idea hit me so hard I fell off the bench. Standing up, I announced my plan.
“We’ll have a wedding!”
This announcement was, to my annoyance, met with blank stares. “Who?” Megan finally asked.
“Do you guys have any imagination at all?” I grumbled. Pointing to the unsuspecting older horses in the pasture. “Mozart and Jazzy, of course!”
Everyone rolled their eyes at the idea. But I narrowed mine. I had all day to plan this special wedding.
That evening I finally convinced my friends that we could put this together. After dinner we gathered at the barn and brought in the paint mare and bay gelding.
“Spa time!” Macey shouted.
I put myself and Megan in charge of Jasmine, and Macey and Sam could design Mozart’s outfits. After struggling with the rusted latch on Jazzy’s halter, I finally figured it out and tossed it onto a hook, quickly replacing it with my sister’s shiny purple halter and lead line. Already Jasmine looked stunning with this minor adjustment.
Later, I was starting to question the idea of the wedding. Jasmine had long fur, and it was taking FOREVER to groom her. Finally, I threw her long, shaggy mane into a braid and Megan sprayed her tail with something shiny. She then weaved a purple braid into the mane while I struggled with an over-sized white blanket, which was to be the wedding gown. I ignored the dirt stains that smudged the edges, where Pogo had stepped on them.
Finally, the bride and groom were ready. But something was missing. We glanced at each other.
“Guests.” My sister finally sighed.
Mozart and Jasmine got to stand quietly in Pogo and Etch’s stalls with a rope looped across each so they could watch while we quickly dressed up our mounts. Everyone had gone a little overboard with the horse costumes, so I decided to go with sleek and simple for Pogo. Luckily, I had the perfect thing - a beautiful, light brown leather halter with a shiny silver noseband. I slipped it onto Pogo and went to help Megan pick a color blanket for Jett.
Suddenly, there was an explosion. Jasmine, overcome with the wedding jitters had ducked under the stall guard and trotted out of the barn. I jogged after her and speaking soothingly to the mare, led her back into the stall where she finally waited patiently for the ceremony to start.
Finally, it did start. Pogo, Jett, and Etch stood in the barn aisle next to me and Macey. We held the guests and I clutched my camera and took some pictures of the monumental event forever etched in Mozart and Jasmine’s lives.
First, Megan stepped in front of us, holding Mozart’s lead while we all hummed “here comes the bride” as Sam led Stormy up, tossing tiny leaves left and right. After Stormy was in line, Megan received Jasmine’s rope and started saying a bunch of mumbo jumbo about loving each other for life, etc. etc. Personally, I don’t think Jasmine totally understood the seriousness of the ceremony, seeing as she still gets mad at Mozart for wanting to share grain.
When she declared “You may kiss the bride,” a miracle happened! Jasmine and Mozart actually touched muzzles for a moment! We all laughed and clapped for the happy couple. Within a few minutes all the costumes were removed and they were set free in the pasture to enjoy their company together, while we indulged in apple slices together with the guests at the reception. |
