In sim game terms, (predominantly with automated games that use an internal system to run shows, breed horses, and manage player finances) a “glitch” refers to a bug or error in the code of the game that causes either exploitable loopholes or problems with game-play. Most players never know about these errors because in many cases finding them requires a comprehensive knowledge about the programming language sim games use, and how to find weak points in it. A well-known example of a sim game experiencing exploitation of weak coding is in the Horseland “Ghost Horses” and “Glitch Horses”.
When Horseland underwent major site changes in October 2008, one of the upgrades were horse vector images generated by the game that reflected the genetics of the new horse.

Horses in the system before this change did not have the coding for genetics. Instead of adding individual genetic codes for the thousands of horses already in the system, Horseland instead gave them a transparent, “ghost” avatar in the stable.

These horses cannot be ridden in the Horseland “world”, but some players found loopholes in the system that allowed them to ride them in the world, at the expense of some visual errors. The horses will not have the normal walking animations, freeze, or “jump” from place to place without animating. Ghost horses, despite not having a stable image, show up as white, dapple grey, or in some rare cases, zebra colored. The mane and tail of a ghost horse is always white.
Ghost horses serve no functionality in Horseland. They are too old to breed, and cannot be ridden in the world via conventional means. Their rarity and the novelty of owning one is the main reason why players take an interest in them, and in some cases, collect them. |
