Mystery Pony Painting Remains Unsolved

A woman who collects and sells all things Victorian era, with a little random vintage thrown in, has an open house several times a year. During this time, she and her family live out of a couple of tiny rooms in their huge Victorian brick house, and the rest of the house is given over to every imaginable type of memorabilia from kitchenware to lace hankies. Beds are strewn with old quilts, clothing, afghans and scarves. Tables are filled with porcelain, china, silverware and crystal, along with ancient table linens and lace. I dislike clutter, so I have to give this woman and her family credit for withstanding the state of chaos. It’s entertaining to go and look at the ‘stuff’, but I’m rarely interested in taking any of it home.
The one big exception, however, is my mystery pony. I found a framed print hidden among the other treasures and it ‘spoke’ to me. The print is of a young girl, with dark brown bobbed hair, carrying the edges of her long skirt in one hand, and leading a white pony with the other. The pony wears a halter, and on its back is a load of branches bearing either red berries or flowers. They both walk through what looks like the rocky shores of a lake, or perhaps seaside. In the background, under a fluffy clouded sky are other girls and ponies, similarly attired and carrying the same load.
Mystery Pony Painting
There is no artist's signature on the print. The frame is old and battered, and I rather like it that way. I have it hung in the hall, out of any direct light, so that it doesn’t fade any further, but it’s still visible from where I often sit to write in my room. I’m fussy about horse art. I like it to be ‘good’. I’m sure my definition of ‘good’ is quite different from everyone else, but I don’t like cheesy, or cliche. I like realism. So the mystery pony is one of the few horse pictures hanging in my home. Someone once saw the print and told me that an identical one hung in an office where she worked. She couldn’t provide any information about the artist or the subject matter though.

For years, I’ve searched the internet using every keyword I can think up to describe my pony print. I’ve posted on many forums and social networks. I’ve searched online archives of artists, looking for similar styles and subjects. However, I’ve found nothing. And, nobody seems to know anything about my mystery pony.
Now, by the time you finish reading this, and look at the image, one or more of you will probably tell me--well, you blockhead, that is a print of a painting of such and such by so and so. I’m sure it’s going to be a face-palm moment. I am quite sure it is nothing of any value. Just one of thousands of prints in an old beat up frame. But, I like my mystery pony, and will, even when it’s no longer a mystery. |
