The Horse Apps I Really Need
|
|
It seems like everyone has a smartphone of some breed, and I have become quite attached to mine. I love being able to tell it to send me reminders, I find it entertaining and a good way to record my activity. I’m disappointed in the apps available to the horse owner. There’s a few, but I haven’t found the ultimate app that helps me manage the most difficult aspects of horse ownership and record the important things I’d like to remember. So, here’s a look at the apps I want on my smartphone.
Exercise and Lifestyle
One of the most-used apps on my phone is the MapMyRun app. I use it to log runs and dog walks, horseback rides and a few other activities. It’s also useful for mapping routes and calculating distances. It is lacking a few activities though, even though there are apps called MapMyDogWalk, MapMyRide and so forth, I want one called MapMyMuckOut. This app would record the number of steps, or the distance walked while mucking out a stable. It would automatically calculate the weight of each fork full, and the total weight in the wheelbarrow as you take it out. If you have to go up a ramp to tip the wheelbarrow out, it will then calculate the incline. Then, it will give you feedback as to the distance travelled, total weight lifted and height climbed. Exercise is of course, a substitute for real work.

Reminders
It’s easy enough to set up reminders to deworm your horse, call your farrier or buy feed with a calendar or task manager. What I need is an app to remind the farrier not to forget about me. I only have one horse. So if a farrier is asked to come to a stable where there are 20 horses to trim, I get put aside. I understand completely. Why make a trip out to trim one horse when you can trim 20 for the same gas money? But, my horse still needs trimming. And, I don’t want to have to remind him of the unique needs of my 1100 lb diva each time he shows up. So, I need an app that will send the farrier a reminder that he has an appointment with me, and then a quick reminder about every hour so he doesn’t forget me. It needs to send relevant information like, Paranoid woman with nervous diva horse that gets lame if trimmed too short would like you to show up at appointed time, or reschedule.
Loyalty Cards
The CardStar app is great for organizing your store reward cards so you don’t have to carry around a brick of plastic cards in your wallet. More feed and tack stores need some sort of ‘frequent flyer card apps’. When it comes to buying horse stuff, most of us are dedicated consumers and that dedication deserves reward.

And we need a PonyBox app. The site looks great on mobile. But we need an app! |

I use the mapmyrun app along with the nike+ one, I go running a lot and they are great for keeping a track of far i've run that week along with any personal bests i've completed.
And we must have the same farrier... mine is either always late or doesn't turn up at all! haha
I use wunderlist for all my reminders and to do lists.
