Help with Hooves
|
|
So you have this absolutely PERFECT horse stock for your custom manip. You dowload it, start to cut it out, then realize: Oh NO! The hooves are virtually invisible! What will I ever do?
Well, maybe you dont think that, but either way, you need help. Alot of horse stock does not have clear hooves, so most people just bury them in the ground. MAJOR no no, unless your at the beach or in very tall grass. Sometimes people try to smudge a hoof into exinstence, or cut it off and forget about it(poor horse xD).
Heres what to do to make you hooves look great:
*OPTION ONE*
1.)Open said stock and cut out the horse using the lasso or eraser, etc
2.)Examine the hooves. Can they be salvaged with small touch-ups? Or are they hopeless?
3.)If you said yes to the latter, skip step 4 and go to option 2
4.)If you said yes to the first question, follow the steps below:
--Zoom in on the hoof (about 200%-300%)
--Click the eyedropper tool and select a pixel on the clear part of the hoof
--Selet the paintbrush tool, and set the size to 1 pixel
--Go over the hoof that is covered with the background (grass strands, dust, etc) but make sure, if the hoof is multi-hued, change the color you painting to make the hoof look more realistic.
--Congradulations! Now do that to other hooves and you are done!
*OPTION TWO*
1.)Go ahead and cut off the hoof(the horse will feel no pain, I promise)
2..)After cutting off the hoof, go to www.deviantart.com or another stock site.
3.)Find a clear hooved stock image of a horse and dowload it. I know you can find just leg stock specifically for this purpose, so search "horse leg stock" first
4.)Cut to hooves off that horse too :D
5.)Select the amputated hooves, and right-click copy them.
6.)Select your horse stock that needs new hooves, and right-click paste
7.)The hooves may need to be resized first, but if not, position the correct hoof to the correct leg (left front to left front NOT left front to hind right)
8.)Blend blend blend! You want the hoof to look realistic, not like another horses hooves (duh :P)
--Use the smudge (careful! put the size at 1 pixel so it isnt very noticeable)
--Use the blur tool (recomended) and go around the top of the hoof connected to the corronary band.
9.)Use your new found skills from my Mane/Tail tutorial to draw very short feathers above the hoof.
--Zoom in to %200-%300
--Select paintbrush tool
--Fade Out 10-30 pixels (unless you are working with a draft or very feathery breed)
--Eyedropper tool over the horses leg hair and click to get the right color
--Draw away!
You should end up with a half-way realistic looking hoof, and if you dont, im sorry. This is how I do my hooves, so I decided to share it with everyone since Ive been getting alot of questions.

This was great. But how funny that I almost used that background on the bottom pic! I REALLY wanted to use it, but wasn't quite what the job required. :P
