Finding an instrument that’s your style isn’t always easy. I had a hard time choosing between two instruments. Some days I used to regret my choice, but now I love my decision. I’m just going to give you a few tips about ways to find an instrument. I will also describe some instruments. I won’t have any string instruments in here, just to let you know.
I play in a band, so my band instructor helped me pick out my instrument. If you are finding an instrument this way, here are a few tips. Have a list of four or five instruments that you are interested in. Always listen to the instructors suggestions, and don’t make their ideas seem stupid. I wanted to play saxophone, but I couldn’t figure it out. Then I tried clarinet, and it was easier then I thought it would be. The moral is, your first choice won’t necessarily be the best choice, or the easiest.
percussion
There are many different instruments in percussion. The snare drum, bass drum, timpani, xylophone, bells, cymbals, and a lot more. The main point of percussion is to keep rhythm. If the percussion is off, the whole band is likely to be off time. The snares use drum sticks (not from chicken) and bass drum and timpani (I believe) use a mallet. Percussion normally learns different types of notes (ex. Eight, sixteenth) faster than wind instruments.
Woodwinds
My favorite, mainly because I play clarinet. I’m just going through basics. Alto Saxophone, Clarinet, Flute, Tenor Saxophone, and Oboe. The Saxophones and Clarinet are single reeds, meaning exactly what it sounds like. An Oboe is a double reed, and a Flute has no reed. Clarinets and Flutes tend to make the best sound when quieter, and I’m not sure when Oboes and Saxophones sound best. If you can’t get a sound out of a Saxophone, then try Clarinet, Oboe or Flute. They may learn different notes slower, but they produce beautiful sounds.
Brass
Trumpets, Trombones, Tubas, and more. Trumpets are the higher range of brass. Trombones and Tubas are lower (most of the time). Trombones have slides, so their notes are made from the position of the slide. Trumpets’ notes are made from blocking off different pathways by pressing different keys. Tubas are the same. These instruments do take a lot of breath, judging from what I’ve seen, but the sound is cool.
Those were some of the more basic instruments. There are many more complex instruments, but too many to go through. Finding an instrument can be hard, but the reward is worth it. You never know, someday you might make a band of your own! |

Great article. Im a band junkie.. and I also play Clarinet and French Horn. And I can answer your statement about how saxes sound good. I dont like it when saxes play toooo quiet but I HATE it when they play tooo loud. So a medium range of volume is good. I also know alot about this stuff, so you can message me for more info..

And also for ALOT of Woodwind and Brass insturments.. there is different ranges ex: Bass Clarinet (I have a dear friend who plays it), Alto Clarinet (I play this also), Piccolo Trumpet... etc. So I suggest trying those too they are REALLY cool.

I've been playing the electric bass for three years and never once regretted my decision. It is truly the best instrument in the world. Ever. xD Besides, you can always be multi-instrumental!
