This week we are posting another email from one of our fans. We get a few of these every month and sometimes we post them here for your amusement. This email was received yesterday from Pat.
Ponybox,
I find it absolutely appalling that you feel it is perfectly fine to allow dangerous and fundamentally wrong training practices to be posted by your members. I'm a regular visitor to your equestrian news section, but after viewing the cart accident article posted earlier this week I can no longer remain quiet. Images of your members practicing dangerous techniques, such as jumping with no hands or bridles is unacceptable. In fact, I can't believe that you have not had your *** sued off and your website shut down. You are promoting the torture of animals and more importantly, the unsafe practice that can result in young riders getting hurt. Horses are meant to be companions, not stunt dummies for your pleasure.
I surely hope you take my email seriously and close your horse news section of this site. I hope you can sleep well at night knowing that you are contributing to the abuse of these lovely creatures. From my observations, your members do not have the training experience necessary to be posting practices for others to follow or imitate.
You need to stick with making games and stay out of the equestrian news business!
Pat
As mentioned above, we get a few angry emails each month, but lately our news section has been a target. At first I assumed it was just the typical emails any website owner receives, but I now feel this is more of a movement by another horse news website to have us shut down. Each month the Ponybox horse news section gains ranking as a leading equestrian news outlet for citizen reporting by our members. I feel this increase in popularity is causing other equestrian news sites to fight back and have us shut down.
Heres another email we received that substantiates this theory:
Article: Tennessee Walker Big Lick Gait Controversy
Also, I'm assuming the jumping with no hands Pat mentioned is meant to be focused at Polo the Weirdo. Her video is below:
We will see where it goes from here, but obviously someone or some company is not happy. |

I believe they're just jealous that they can't ride as well as Polo :P I also have a very hard time believing that someone without her experience would try something like that. I mean, common sense. And the girls in this Cart racing article were not pulling a dangerous stunt, they were just out driving their horse!

Wow just Wow!
If they dont like something they are reading why on earth keep reading here?
It seems silly to me that if you constantly read things you dont like or dont agree with that you throw a hissy fit and stomp your feet when its as simple as walking away!

OK, riding and jumping bareback with no reins is NOT horse abuse! If anything, it's better for the horses. I'm sure they preffer to be jumped like in the video, ather than having to lug around the extra weight of a saddle and without having someone playing in their mouth before a jump.
Not only is jumping with no reins good for your horse but, it can also help them not refuse.
I am 12 years old and when my pony was refusing, my coach told me to drop my reins and jump him like that. And you know what? He jumped really well and he was happy!
When my pony was to strong and would speed up or change leads while I was cantering him, my coach told me to take off my stirrups. And you know what? He cantered amazingly!
So honestly Pat, If you have nothing better to do with you life then complain about "Animal Abuse" as you call it, well, that's actually kind of sad.

Polo is riding her horse as we all should. Not only does that give her horse a feeling of freedom, but she is making the bond between them even stonger.
So go ahead and complain all you want Pat, but there are thousands of people who strongly disagree with you.
P.S. I found your E-mail very amusing. I couldn't read it with out laughing at how narrow minded someone can possibly be.

I don't get why jumping without a saddle or a bridle is as bad as the person who wrote that letter makes it sound. I have jumped without a saddle or a bridle and its fine. As long as you have a safe horse and your a good rider, I don't see why not. As long as your being safe, its no problem. You can be very unsafe without a saddle too. There is arguments on both sides. I think people should be open to other peoples opinions.

Wow.... Pat needs to know that everyone has different training techniques and just because they aren't exactly like hers, that doesn't mean that they're "horrid and dangerous"!! If she has a problem with everyone else's training techniques, she needs to get over herself and quit reading the news.

Obviously this 'Pat' knows nothing of animal cruelty. The types of animal abuse/cruelty are as follows:
Starvation, overcrowding, lack of shelter, Beating, bestiality, burning, choking/suffocating, drowning, hanging, hoarding, kicking, torture/multilation, neglect/abandonment, poisoning, shooting, stabbing, throwing, smuggling, vehicular (i.e. dragging animal behind a vehical), and fighting (i.e. forcing two animals to fight against each other resulting in serious injuries or death.) And the crop or spurs are only cruelty if used improperly or with excessive force.

Pat - BOO HOO, go cry Polo and Jeff a river, your just mad that you arn't a good enough rider to do that. Polo has amazing horses that she obviously trusts alot, they arn't your horses, so go cry to someone that cares. Your just plain wrong about everything you said in that email, I mean really? (and not all horses are just kept for companionship. I know someone who ONLY keeps show horses, they can't win, they don't stay.)

But Polo is an amazing jumper. People can do whatever they want, there is nothing stopping anyone that does stunts on their horse. It can be a form of balance, not showing off and why does Pat want to send such horrid emails anyway? I love the news articles! There are amazing stuff to be told to everyone on this website, new kinds of tack and thing that you wouldn't know about if you didn't search online. This is like a source of information for everyone....

Ok first off this lady needs to get grip. There is nothing wrong with riding a horse bridles or with nothing on your horse and future more it is frankly none of her business. The native Americans did that along time ago, so whats the difference in change now??? If she thinks it's so wrong then she needs to look up a couple people on the net who are professorial horse trainers. Like Stacy Westfall this lady has a you-tube video of her doing reining with NOTHING ON HER HORSE. ALSO she needs to look up Clint Anderson, I've been watching his videos and programs not only online but t.v too. Plus in May myself and my dad might be going to one of his clinics.
How is it any different for these kids to advice from people on here then going to someone at their local horse show and asking for advice. This lady needs to learn that EVERYONE has different methods of teaching their horses and so forth.
I've been on PB since 2007 and even though I've had different accounts I SEE nothing wr

I've been on PB since 2007 and even though I've had different accounts I SEE nothing wrong with PB. Jeff is doing what he started in the beginning to create and maintain a horse Sims game and nothing has really change on that aspect of the main purpose.

I semi-agree with this. There quite a few riders/members out there who do things that are unsafe, but it is there choice to do so. And it is also their choice to share it or not. Or perhaps, they deem it as "safe" while others see it as not. It all depends on what each person's definition of the word is. It also depends on the person/rider and their horse. Some horses can be ridden with no tack while others cannot. I jump my mare with nothing but a halter or no hands and it's 100% safe (unless I so happen to lose my balance, but that can happen to the best of us). I wouldn't dare take the halter off of her at this moment in time though. Just like you wouldn't dare remove the bridle of a horse that you know bucks, rears or bolts etc. It's just not smart, people need to use more common sense. But I guess the funny thing about common sense these days is that it's not all that common.
I do think it would be a good idea for riders to state some sort of disclaimer. Like I tend to see, "Do

I do think it would be a good idea for riders to state some sort of disclaimer. Like I tend to see, "Do not try this at home." or "Do not attempt without professional supervision." or something along those lines. Because I know for a fact that there will be some young kid on Ponybox that will see someone jumping with no tack or running some crazy Gymkhana course and think, "I can do that too!" Then the kid ends up getting hurt for trying to do something that they were clearly not capable of or ready for. Safety first! That's the key. If it's not safe, then don't do it. It's that simple. Don't try to do this or that just be be like so-and-so or to impress your friends. Take advice from the Professionals, not the novice Ponybox rider with an untrained eye who thinks, 'Wow, you can jump so high, you are such an amazing rider!' or 'You have a ton of blue ribbons so you must be good!' Very few of us here are "Professionals". So I personally would not advise taking advice from those who are not unless they have years of experience/training or even a license (in which the person would have to be over 18), if that. You could be 15 and the top rider in your circuit, but that doesn't matter. Fast times and blue ribbons have nothing to do with how good you are, no matter what people may think.
If it comes down to it, maybe Ponybox should start filtering what gets displayed or set an age minimum on the site. But ultimately, it is the kid's fault for following the example of any player on the site or posting something that could be dangerous for others to try. Maybe parents should start monitoring their children closer? I suppose not everyone can be happy in this case though. Just my little input there, sorry I kinda blabbered on forever.

Hahahaha!! Thank you for sharing this Jeff, I really got a kick out of someone who tried to sabotage the news post but failed miserably at it. I don't see any animal abuse out the cart driving accident, for me, it teaches a life lesson so you can learn from your mistakes. And as for Polo, keep doing what your doing. I show parents every single article of yours, and I fathom at your riding ability. For me, the more excitement someone has while jumping, it makes it all better to watch or see how much they are having on the horses that give them joy. Horses are dangerous animals, but we learn from them in so many ways. Pat really needs to stop drinking the haterade, and grow up

I agree with Silver Night. I have never done it but I have seen qualified instrutors teach it in a grid. It is GREAT work with your horse so that they listin more to your leg and not your hand and the rider will learn to use more leg and less rein. Great excrsise.

Personally I think that email was a bit of an overreaction. I'm glad to see that people express their concerns like that, however, I am an experienced equestrian and never saw anything in the PB news that really worried or alarmed me. Some of the articles, such as the cart driving one, didn't rub off on me too well because of writing style and opinion ("I'll never do so and so again because it's totally dangerous") but I understand you do want to include different opinions and age groups, even if that means there won't be professionally written articles.
For the most part, Jeff, and the PB team, I think you have been doing a good job with the news but it's a really fine line to walk and decide which training methods to include and not to include. I don't want to see the PB news shut down as I think it's the best part of the site, but I think maybe the articles need to be reviewed with more of a trainer's point of view (I'm not saying you don't, but that you have to keep in mind that

Riding with a saddle is dangerous - a chance of being hung up in your stirrups, but yet everyone considers it a safe practice.
Riding a horse with a helmet can still be dangerous (helmets won't save your life 100% of the time...), but yet everyone considers it a safe practice.
Riding a horse in an arena is dangerous (running into the gate, ect) - but yet again, this is considered a safe practice.
Using certain trainers advice (such as Clinton Anderson, Pat Parrelli, Chris Cox, Kevin McCnab, ect.) is considered the "right" way, but yet people still get hurt doing it, but yet again, it's considered a safe practice.
What I'm trying to say is, riding a horse in general is dangerous, and even these so called "safe practices" are not always safe. Hope you can see my point.
