Almost every horse racing fanatic and even people who don’t follow the sport, has heard of the immortal racehorse Secretariat.
Secretariat became America’s superhorse in 1973. It was in that year that he won the first leg of the Triple Crown, the Kentucky Derby. Battling down the stretch against rival Sham, Secretariat pulled away by 2 lengths.
In the Preakness, without warning to his rider, Secretariat, on his own, made a tremendous move on the turn and went for the lead with astoni . . .read more
I am going through difficult times in my life right now, and right now there is one place that I can get over it-the stables. Every Thursday, I go to the only advanced lesson stable in my area, and have a lesson. During that 2-3 hour period, I forget everything except my riding and how happy and lucky I am to be riding. My little aches and pains go away during that little period. That is the magic of horses.
Cowboy first came into my life about a year ago. He was boarded at the same stab . . .read more

It was this young Thoroughbred's heart that brought him first at the finish line of two of America's cherished races. His victories brought joy to the hearts of his jockey and trainer. This horse was Claiborne Farm's horse and they loved him. Not only for what he had done, but for what he would do as the farm's stallion. His blood continuing a dynasty.
And then, quite suddenly, but with shocking finality, his heart stopped and he was gone.
How would you like to go on a vacation where you could lie on the beach, play in the surf, and come home with a pony? If you take a summer holiday to Chincoteague Island, you can. Chincoteague itself is a popular vacation island, and has plenty of hotels and restaurants, but most people come for the more rugged camping on neighboring Assateague Island, and of course the wild pony herds there.
You can camp and play on Assateague, but you need to get a boat there. Once you’re there, you’re o . . .read more
Don't you ever wish you could find your past horses just to see how they were doing and maybe just visit them for a little while? i miss my Harley he was a tennessee walker and he was the best bud i ever had. He was so great that when we ran or did something crazy he would check to see if i was still on. He had such great manners and he was just awesome. I learned almost everything i know on him. Well the basics atleast. I just wish i could get him back somehow but i just know he wouldn't be the . . .read more
I have found that drawing artificial manes and tails with GIMP can be very challenging. If you agree, then I suggest this new technique, invented by me.
I suspect this technique will work with other programs, though I will be using GIMP for my explanation.
First, open GIMP and make your basic graphic. Be sure to chop off the mane and tail.
Then, pull out the paintbrush. Adjust your brush size to a size between .02 and .06. Choose the base color for your mane/tail. Paint a bunch of squ . . .read more
Over time the Horse has won hearts and the donkey has won humor. Donkeys or Longears are usally connected with words like "stubborn","untrainable" and "foxy", but now people are realising what the donkey really is.
When asked about donkeys, many people scratch their heads and try to remember. Donkeys are Equines -- just like Horses, Onagers, Asses, Zebras and Hybrids (Mules, Zorses...). They have there own breeds likie Mammoth, Minature and Poutiou. They have hooves, manes, tails, ears and al . . .read more
Sooner or later we all want to take out horses somewhere. It might be to a show, a trail ride, or for a lesson. We might need someone to bring us a horse we’ve just bought, or take one we’ve sold to its new owner. Many people can transport horses themselves, with their own trailer or horsebox. But if you don’t travel your horse often, and don’t want to buy your own trailer, or you don’t have a car or truck that can tow, then hiring a transporter is a good idea. Sometimes a professional tran . . .read more
It was about 3 years ago when I first laid eyes on him. He was a little grey Welsh Pony with big brown eyes. He had arrived at the farm that I ride at with two other horses. They all came from the same farm. I didn’t know it then but this little pony would be a big part of my riding.
He was mostly used for beginners at the farm, so I never got the chance to ride him. That all changed though when I started helping my instructor out at the farm during the winter. I would clean stalls, turn . . .read more
We breed 'em versatile down in New Zealand. Germany may have their Grand Prix Dressagers, Britain may have their die-hard cross-countriers, and America may have their high-flying show jumpers.
But we've got all three.
Mark James Todd (aka. Toddy) is a perfect example of typical Kiwi muli-tasking ability. Born on the 1st of March, 1956, he has led a remarkable life laying waste to some of the best eventing fields the world has to offer. He was voted Rider of the 20th Century by the FEI.
Last time, we talked about Kelso, and why he’s one of the best racehorses ever. But this time, let’s find out about the horse that’s arguably the best ever, but over a quarter mile.
Born in 1953, most of you may have never heard of him, but you might recognize his name from racing quarter pedigrees. So why pick him over other great racers, like Dash For Cash or Easy Jet? Well, Go Man Go is one of only two quarter hoses to win World Champion Quarter Running Horse three years in a row (the ot . . .read more
Everyone loves a good gallop, horses and riders alike. But after a hard workout, a long ride on ahot day, or a tough event, what’s the right way to cool your horse down?
First of all, never underestimate how important it is to cool off your horse properly. Making a mistake with a hot horse can cause serious problems – horses can go into shock, get colic, and in severe cases even die. Taking shortcuts when cooling off can lead to skin sores, bruising, and dehydration, so it’s important to g . . .read more
Size and Fit:
A properly fitting pad will extend at least one inch beyond the saddle on all sides. This means that you should choose a pad that is at least 2 inches longer than the length of your saddle and 2 inches wider than the width of the underside of the skirts. A smaller pad won’t provide enough protection and can result in sores. A pad that's too big can cause problems, too by creating excess heat and bulk.
Care:
Before each use, inspect your pad for burs, twigs, hay or other annoyi . . .read more

EYES
For my eyes, I start with the top eyelid. Then I draw a circle underneath for the eyeball. From here I add the lower lid and eyelashes. Most eyebrows follow the same line as the upper lid. The iris and pupil are your own interpretation. Mine are three basic circles. One for the highlights of the eye, one for the pupil, and one for t . . .read more
Mustangs are part of America’s heritage, but they weren’t meant to be. They aren’t native to America. Beginning with runaways from the Spanish Conquistadores, and with centuries of mixing with other escapees from early settlers and horses let loose on ranches, their ability to survive has helped them carve out a niche in US history. At times, thousands of wild horses roamed across western America, from Oregon to the Mexican border.
But not everyone loves mustangs. For centuries settlers and . . .read more
If you want to be your own boss, you want to spend all day with horses, and nothing makes you happier than knowing you can make a horse feel better, then equine massage is a great career choice. Most people love a professional massage, and there is plenty of research to show how it helps relieve stress, speed up healing for injuries, and prevent muscle soreness and fatigue. It’s no different for horses!
In fact, equine massage may be even more important to horses than people – the horse’s b . . .read more
