Tempting a kelpie with the game of fate is never wise...
What is a Kelpie?
answer:
The kelpie is a water spirit, or demon, from Celtic mythology and is similar to a nix. It can also be called a water horse, it is like many Celtic spirits a trickster which leads humans astray.
This spirit appears as a lost pony. It is usually black though in some stories it appears white. It can be recognized because its main is continually dripping water and its skin is like that of a seal. Its skin is cold to the touch and hooves that are backwards. It's appearance is also described as strong and breathtaking. It lives in lakes and streams waiting for travelers or children, who see the beautiful horse attempt to mount it, at which time its skin becomes very sticky and it dives into the water and drowns the rider. It then devourers everything except the heart and the liver.
Other legends say that it is not the Kelpie itself which lures and kills travelers but that it mates with horses and the ponies which are born are the one which actually kill people, but the horse is not completely evil. It is also said to help run water mills and deliver trash into the sea.
Later myths explained that the Kelpie hates humans for the destruction of its home and that mentioning the name of Christ will get you thrown off the horse. These additions which are not part of the original myth are attempts to integrate Celtic myths with other religions.
The key to the capture and control of a Kelpie resided in its bridle. This shape shifting demon's power resided in that bridle and anyone who could take control of it could control the kelpie. As a result of this the kelpie bridle was a highly prized treasure because a kelpie was said to have ten times the endurance of a normal horse. The Mcgregor clan was said to be in possession of one of those bridles passed down through the generations by one who managed to escape a kelpie and capture its bridle.
There is one myth about the kelpies that I tend to use more than this that deals with the coloring. In the myth it says that the horse has a dark green mane and tale but can be any normal horse color....
