Keep his shoulder out from the barrel, and head bent torwards the barrel, which would in turn help put shoulder out and keep hip in.

It's called bending, it keeps the flexed and responsive to dig in and turn the barrel sharp. I'm an NBHA barrel racer, I havn't knocked a barrel in almost a year now, and that's always what I do.
