My Only Sunshine
A Deadsy Doodle

"Hey, I've got breakfast ready, come eat while it's still hot." Ozzie said leaning against the doorway of his daughter's shared room. His eyes hung heavily, dark, tearstained, glassy and dazed, the way they had been for weeks. Seemingly forever to Izzie, his oldest.

The seven year old put away their box of crayons and lead her little sister to the set table, the summer sun outside shining brightly into the room. Their baby brother, Spencer busily switching between his sippy cup and pacifier. Alexis cradeled a drawing in her lap as she sat down next to her sister, their father had already caringly dished up their plates with a little of everything, arranged artfully into playful shapes, the way he'd always done.

Ozzie sat down soundlessly with his cup of coffee. He leaned on his arm staring into space numbly, lost in reflection of how quickly their lives had turned and the heavy aching of his heart he'd been trying to avoid since his trust and love was shattered. His new art, the art of holding himself together.

Izzie looked up at his face, almost cold in color. He'd neglected his appearance with the fallout, his normally well kept facial stubble had grown long and ragged into a wirey jungle. Icy blue eyes looked a little more gray, the light not nearly as bright in them as they used to be just months earlier.

"Dad? Are you okay?" she asked, concerned as her little sister sat next to her making the most of the meal, and Spencer starting to venture into trying some food.

"Just tired." he said still spaced, but gripping to stay somewhat focused to prevent havvok in the highchair next to him.

Lexie placed the drawing from her lap on the table and pushed it to him.
"We drew new pictures because you took the old ones down." she smiled, hoping her father would embrace them the same enthusiastic way he taught them to draw and paint.

"They look nice, babe." he said picking it up gently, straightening a small crinkle. A slight smile flickered across his face as he looked at the four stick figures. A tall one, two small ones and a tiny one. He glanced up at the empty frame where a family portrait used to rest. He closed his eyes a moment and took a long sip from his coffee and released a sad sigh before turning to look at his son and wipe the mess from his face and hands before it started to spread everywhere else.
