This horse is named Te Akau Shark and he has a cult following in both New Zealand and Australia. After running a very good third behind a champion Japanese horse in the time-honoured Gr.1 Cox Plate he returned to New Zealand and finally got his Group 1 victory last weekend. As you can see, his regular jockey Opie Bosson is very grateful!
Horse races are categorised differently in different countries, but internationally the top three classes are known as Group/Grade Three, Group/Grade Two, and Group/Grade One shortened to Gr.3, Gr.2, and Gr.1 respectively. Gr.1 being the highest quality race a horse can win. Colloquially they are also known as "black-type" and a horse with black-type is very valuable.
