The Equalizer Comfort Girth is a staple at my barn. It's the most popular girth there for several good reasons, though some people prefer to use leather or other synthetic girths. I will outline the pros and cons of the Equalizer Comfort Girth below, so you can make your own decision.
The Equalizer Comfort Girth is a synthetic Hunter and Jumper girth. It has synthetic fleece (Equifleece) on the underside. It can be used with all-purpose and close contact saddles. It has elastic on each end with roller buckles. It also has a Dee ring in the middle. This girth can be bought from places like EnglishRidingSupply.com and DoverSaddlery.com.
Pros:
The best thing about this girth is that it is easy to adjust. It is also mildew-proof and doesn't chafe. It is very affordable (It starts at $30) and lasts several years. From a distance it looks like a fancier fleece girth and is acceptable at most small shows. The elastic is nice and sturdy and even when it stretches works well. Having elastic on both sides looks balanced and neat and makes adjusting it very simple. It is easy to clean if it's just hairy brushing it off works, but if it's really gross throwing it in the washer does the trick. It is very easy to care for since there's no leather to clean or oil.
Cons:
Because of the thick padding, it takes a while to dry (setting it in the sun dries it off pretty well though) and it retains some odors so after a while it can start smelling pretty gross from all the sweat. This is when it's a good time to put it in the laundry. The elastic stretches after a couple years but is still usable and doesn't compromise the girth in any way. If you leave the girth out in the damp for too long or too often, the metal pieces will eventually start to rust. It usually doesn't rust very fast.
I would recommend this girth to anyone looking for a sturdy girth at a good value. Despite its drawbacks it is a nice girth and holds up really well. I suggest buying it as a bonus from Dover Saddlery, because after buying items adding up to a certain price, you can buy it for $20 along with the rest of the purchase. |
