The World Famous Lipizzaner Stallions

When Halfbrokehorses published the article on the Lipizzaners, I was thrown back in time to February 13th of 2008. At that time I was sitting at the stands of the Alliant Energy Center in Wisconsin, waiting for the show to begin. I stared down at the center of the arena, a dressage ring. I remember thinking that this was the best birthday present ever, and it still is. I closed my eyes and could picture those horses, dancing with their riders, the harmony was so perfect you couldn't tell who was leading the dance, you just know that it worked.
I opened my eyes and then spent hours scouring my computer for the pictures of that day, but I couldn't find them. So to mine, and hopefully your delight my mother managed to find them. I present you with a brief history of the Lipizzaner, and some pictures of them from the World Famous Lipizzaner Stallions. I can only give you what I know, but for more I suggest the site http://www.lipizzaner.com/home.asp.
The Lipizzaners are believed to have been brought into the world over 2'000 years ago, their forerunner bred at Carthage. The Carthaginian stock was bred to the Vilano, Pyrenees horse with Arab and Barbary strains and the result was the Andalusian horse of ancient Spain. While the Moorish dominated Spain for 700 years the breed remained the same. Occasionally crossing with Arabian and oriental blood. The rest of what I know is brief, the horses were shown to General Patton and he fell in love with the magestic beasts. Until they could by returned to their home, General Patton took them as US wards. They were moved around alot, returning to their home in Lipizza only to flee the oncoming armies of France.
I hope you enjoy the photos and the article, and if you ever have a chance to see these magnificent horses in action, take it. It is amazing. |
