Losing the Fight- The Story of Coke-a-Cola
|
|
My dog, a Dachshund named Rosa, recently had puppies 4 days ago on August 18, 2010 . She gave birth to 4 puppies, which included 3 boys and 1 girl. My dachshund, Rosa, is a reddish color, her puppies though, were more like the dad, a dachshund named Geppetto that was a Reverse Chocolate Dapple.
Rosa was in labor from around 6:00 pm through 6:00 am August 18. 24 hours in labor was not fun for her, or me. I stayed up with her all night and didn't get one second of sleep, my sister was there with me but she slept through most of it. I woke her up when Rosa looked like she was going to have a puppy, after about 10-20 minutes Coke-a-Cola, better known as Coke, was the first to be born. He was the runt by far, which surprised me because they are usually not born first. Next, was another boy, my sister named him J.Z. He was big and a little pig. We waited about an hour until the first girl was born! She was such a howler and sounded like a wolf pup, we decided to name her Moony. We waited for about another hour then, last but not least, another pup was born. I thought for sure it was going to be a girl, but, it was a boy. My dad named him Rowdy. Coke ended up being half the size of all the other pups.
Rosa cleaned them all and then they all nursed, Coke, the runt, was having trouble, but got the hang of it after a while. The puppies slept fine their first night, but I woke in the morning to Moony squeaking.
That same night Coke stopped nursing, but I just thought he wasn't hungry. I woke the next morning to find Coke under Rosa to stay warm and it looked as if he hadn't nursed at all during the night. He looked very sick, so I called my dad and asked him to get puppy formula and a nursing bottle. When my dad got home he went to see Coke and said he looked sicker then he thought. We made him some formula and gave it to him, but he didn't really want to drink it. What he did drink though, most of it came out of his nose.
We decided to take him to the Vet with urgency. We called the Vet and got a appointment and drove him, his brother, sister, and mother to the Vet.
We took him in the room where we weighed him, he was 4.3 ounces, which is good for a dachshund pup that might be a little under. The vet evaluated him and said he had a Cleft Palate. The look on my dad's face devastated me, the Vet said it meant he had a slit on the roof of his mouth, so when he suckled the milk it would come out his nose. It could also cause milk to get in his lungs and give him Pneumonia. We walked out of the room and my dad stayed in to talk to the vet. I started to cry because I knew what was coming. They X-rayed Coke and he had Pneumonia already. My dad told my sister and I to go out to the truck, I started sobbing uncontrollably. We both screamed, "NO! WE CAN SAVE HIM!" but my dad just told us the same thing. I picked up the box holding the puppies and Rosa and walked out to the truck. They put Coke under anesthesia and then put in medicine to stop his heart. I didn't stop sobbing. We drove home and buried Coke in our back yard.
It had been 2 days now (8/21/10) and every time I look at his grave tears still spill over my face. Even as I wrote this story a few tears fell. I am sorry I had to share this sad story with you, I just needed to let it out. |

oh my gosh that is so sad! my two cats died in the last two years - Barney in 2008 and Purdy in May 2010. They were both 14 when they died and i know they were quite old, but I cried so much... I understand how you feel.
RIP Coke RIP Barney RIP Purdy

That's awful. But he is in a better place now, where he is in no pain. I must say, it is odd. My Birthday is on August 18th. And my cat's name is Rhodi, same as the last puppy, just spelled different.
