Satin Was His Name

I'd like to start off by saying why I joined this site. And it was mostly because I saw I could share my stories about the insane, lovely and silly things my horses have done, the hard times they helped me through, what I do and why I do so. Mostly for myself, mostly to have a place to share these things I've kept for years. Though, excuse my lack of photographs, I have very few at this moment. Maybe one day, I'll have a way of showing you what I'm trying to tell.
It all begun with the sad, horrendous story of my mother's beloved horse. My mother, like me, is quite infected with the horse bug. She work with horses, and I want to follow in her footsteps and work with them also. Her first real horse was obtained many, many years before I was born.
I've only heard the stories, but it goes something like this...
My mother was traveling quite far to look at potential horses to buy and ended up finding her 'perfect' horse. The moment of perfection was perfected with a solid dose of thoughtlessness, too. While standing between two veterinarians for advice in this tough choice - both those veterinarians are now good friends of my mother - my mother blurted out her first thought.
"What cute ears that horse have!"
The veterinarians laughed, yet my mother went with her ear-instincts and bought the horse. Satin was it's name. Mother brought it back and enjoyed several years training, loving and living out the hard life of a horse-owner with her dream-horse.
In the midst of this she met my father. They eventually moved together and my father declared that they didn't have enough room for the horse, so they found a place where Satin could stay until they could make space for her.
Time passed, the old stable was fixed up and everything was set, when mother called to get her horse back.
"It's dead," the man said, "Slaughtered two days ago."
Mother had never agreed with such a thing, certainly she wouldn't just slaughter the horse of her dreams out of nowhere! Believing the man was lying and possibly planning to steal and sell the horse, mother rushed over.
All she found was Satin's papers in a thick folder, a hole stabbed through the papers just like a hole had been torn through my mother's heart.
Even today mother tears up when talking about it. Recently, a seemingly insane trotter-mare we rescued has practically healed mother's heart, though, becoming that other dream, but I know the scar won't ever be gone.
Satins folder still stands on our shelf, covered with dust and with a glaring hole that won't ever be repaired. The first time I heard of this I admit I cried. As did mother. I could relate, I really could, since I was partly the reason Satin's stall didn't get finished fast enough.
But it also shows how big of a part a horse can be of a person. I know that Satin was a part of mother like my Spinni is a part of me, so I can't imagine how it would be to have something that precious ripped away.
There is still that other horse out there, calling for you and knowing you are the one. And I also see how much it can heal to find that horse, if you are so lucky. Though ears were the beginning, and one rotten person the end, there's always a second beginning.
No matter how hard it might be to realize it.
Picture is of my mother and her new dream horse's foal, Villig. Just to show that despite having lost a piece of her heart, life moved on, giving her a new horse that tries his best to fill parts of that missing piece in her heart.

My goodness, thank you all for the great comments! I can assure you all with the fact that I absolutely love writing about these old memories-turned-stories of mine, so there will be many more in the future! Hopefully, I'll even get some decent pictures for it all. :'D
And to OnTopOfTheWorld, I'm so sorry about Mickey, I really am. Losing a pony is truly one of the worst things. D: And I most definitively will continue writing.

OMG!! Did you she sue them? I would've! If they SLAUGHTERED my horse without even mentioning anything to me, I would go and kick their butts! I'm strongly against slaughter, especially in this case....your mom wasn't even told they were gonna kill her horse for NO reason?

No, there wasn't any suing, sadly enough. However, we do know that the man wasn't quite... well, how do I put this... right in the head. And no, mother wasn't told. D: But I surely wish I could kick their butts, but it's probably far too late for that now. I guess some people really view things differently. :/

Shanaz was born in France many, many years before me. He was raised completely by man for one reason or another, which still reflects in the horse he is today. Pictures of him being fed with a bottle in someone's kitchen makes me ...
