It was a hot, sunny, summer afternoon when we pulled up the familiar Golden Gaits driveway.
"Bye Mom!!" I said as I quickly darted out of the car and up to the barn. I smiled as Remix was led up to the post and tied.
"Who would you like to ride today?" BJ, the main instructor asked me.
I almost laughed and pointed to Remix.
"I could've guessed," she laughed and told me to mount up. I almost ran to him as I flung my helmet over my head.
"Hey buddy!" I called and he answered me with a nicker. I untied him, put my foot in the stirrup and swung over, patting his neck. I picked up the reins and said, "Alright, let's go!"
Over the last several weeks of riding him, I had developed his trust. This was something that I believed to be extremley important before a behavior change. After having that special trust with him, I believed today was the day to not let him get away with anything, and change the way he acted.
We took off, heading for the park again as we crossed the road. A car slid to a stop, the tires screeching, and he tried to take off running. I quickly pulled him into a tight circle, which immediatley calmed him down. He let out a sigh, and we finished crossing the street, catching up with the others.
The park was hectic that Saturday. There were little kids running around screaming, dogs, you name it!
When we entered through the gate, a screaming kid with a dog was there to great us. Remix half reared in fright, and I held on tight.
"Easy boy, easy.." I whispered in his ear, and patted his neck. He turned his head to face me and nickered softly. I laughed to myself and nudged him on.
It went good for a while, until we passed through a field with high grass. He chomped down on the grass, or at least he tried to. Every time he tried to sneak a bite, I would answer with a "No!" or a slight yank on the reins. This went on for a while, until he actually stopped, but he had his ears pinned at me. We continued to walk through the park until he decided it was a good time to use the bathroom. When he finished, we were pretty far behind from the rest of the group. I clucked and said, "Let's get 'em!"
He picked up a lope, and we started gaining on the rest of the group. We loped for a while before I almost flew forward. He had stepped into a hole, and he had thankfully kept his balance. I was breathing heavily, and he was shaking.
"Walk," I said, my voice shaky.
He reluctantly, but obediently, stepped forward. We caught up to the tail end of the group and walked quietly behind them.
My friend Rachel slowed her horse down. "Are you okay? I saw that trip!"
I looked at her and half-smiled. "I'm okay."
The rest of the ride was quiet and uneventful, thank goodness. We finally made it back to the barn when I headed straight for Remix's spot along the railing. I dismounted and hit the ground, legs shaky. I stood with him for a little bit, until BJ came up to me.
"You've done a great job with that horse! Would you like to be an assistant with us?"
I gasped. Assistants were usually teens who had been recognized for doing something amazing, and got to be mini instructors around the barn. I was only twelve!!
"Yes!" I said, and she nodded and walked off.
I looked at Remix, and saw a look of love and affection in his eyes. I threw my arms around him, and gave him a hug.
And guess what?
He hugged back.

Well that was it then. I was moving. I was leaving everything I loved behind. It was only a thirty minute move, but I still had to switch schools, churches, and barns. But I still had the rest of the summer and I was going to live ...
