The Shriek of a Peacock On My First Trail Ride
|
|
I jumped out of the car and said “See ya later Mom!” as I took a deep breath of the cool crisp morning air and walked to the barn. I found Mr. McLaughlin feeding the horses. I talked to him until the horses were done eating, then Mr. McLaughlin and I groomed Freckles, the horse I was going to ride, and Chris, the horse Mr. McLaughlin was going to ride. We groomed them until their coats shoned in the morning sun. Mr. McLaughlin and I tacked them up and got them ready to go.
The leather squeaked as we got on our horses, and I was thinking “Oh I hope I stay on, and don’t fall off and look stupid.” We worked the horses in the ring walking and trotting until they were calm and working together. Mr. McLaughlin swung open the gate and we headed out on the trails. I was a little nervous because this was the first time I was out on roads or trails with Freckles, but I knew it was going to be fun!
We were walking up the road towards the trail when we heard a rather loud screeching noise. It got louder and louder as we got closer. Suddenly the horses heard it and stopped abruptly. Mr. McLaughlin and I urged them forward making them walk toward the sound. Almost at once the sound, that we determined was a peacock, shrieked so loud Chris, Mr. McLaughlin’s horse, spooked and reared. Chris lost his balance and fell into me and Freckles. I walked Freckles in circles until I heard the clatter of hooves against the road behind me.
I turned to see what was going on and there was Chris bolting up the road. I was then suddenly caught off guard as Freckles scrambled after him.
I grabbed tight to Freckles mane with one hand and held my reins with the other. Freckles suddenly put on a burst of energy and lurched forward I lost my stirrup and clung tighter to his mane. I started trying to slow him down by pulling gently on the reins but he ignored me and kept running. At this point we had passed by Chris and Mr. McLaughlin, I sat back hard in the saddle and pulled firmly on the reins and finally Freckles slowed to a bumpy bone jarring trot and then stopped.
Mr. McLaughlin trotted Chris up to where we were and stopped him. I was breathing heavily, and I felt so relieved. “I forgot my helmet!” I said “but that was so much fun! Let’s do it again!” We let them run down the road to the turn off and continued on our trail ride with no other unexpected gallops. |

Aha once I was riding Pogo bareback at night, and it was our first time ever riding alone, and then we were just trotting along when Pogo jumping to the side, and I stopped him and looked over and it turned out he almost stepped on a peacock! LOL
