Horselessness can be hard to cope with. I have a serious case of it, and I'm learning how to deal with it. It can make you mad, sad and even go crazy. To thoroughly understand how to cope with it, or to help someone else cope with it, we have to learn what it is.
Horselessness is when a horse-crazy person doesn't have the room, time or money to own a horse.
This can be quite frustrating and stressful. You love horses and want to be with them all the time, but you can't. There are a few blessed people who have the money to have lessons or go on trail rides. I think that it is kind of mean to tell a person without a horse of their own to get lessons or lease, since most of them can't afford it. The people who can't do much with horses often don't get help and are not included in equestrian activities. But it isn't hopeless, just keep reading.
The most important thing to do is surround yourself with horses, not real ones, fake ones. get posters, pillows, blankets, statues, decorative items, etc. But if you've been horse-crazy for any length of time, you probably have already done this. You can print out posters, buy them, or get them from magazines. You can get pillows and blankets with horses on them from department stores or online. You can get decor from departments or thrift stores, online, or for your birthday.
Second, you want to learn as much as you can about horses. subscribe to a horse magazine, like horse illustrated. You can join horsey websites and forums or a horseless 4-h club. You can borrow books on horses from your library or go to shows and clinics that don't require you to bring your own horse. And if you can, work at a stable, you might even score a few free riding lessons.
Third, find situations where you can be around horses or even ride. Save up for a few riding lessons, or volunteer to help a friend get their horse ready for a show. You could maybe look for volunteer position at a equine rescue center. When your around horses always, always, always ask questions. People that want to help you will love to answer them and most people won't take you serious unless you ask questions.
Last, but not least, save up. you need lots of money for a horse. Put your spare change in a jar, have a garage sale, babysit, mow yards, have a lemonade stand, shovel sidewalks, and save up birthday money. Each time time you are tempted to spend it, think about your future horse.

Remember, even if you have enough money to buy a horse, the daily expenses will will cost many times that throughout the life of the horse.

Great article! I had this before. It is horrible, I drove myself crazy lol! The only thing is, at least for me, I read, slept and breathed horses.Except I wasn't able around them. It was worse for me when I'd watch another horse movie or read another book. It made me want horses more and then made me feel worse. I wasn't able to be around horses because of money and I didn't have time.I'd always tell myself that I'd never get the chance to be around horses until I owned one of my own,and that would be many years later. But on my B-day this past year my parents surprised me, and they are now letting me take riding lessons. I picked out the barn and now I'm riding every week and I love it. Over time, you will be able to be around horses so just ignore the "horselessness" for now and look to the future. It can always be bright if you make it. :D

I've a stable nearby, but its very rundown. Even so, i don't think that my parents would allow me to work there as im only 11 now. My parents won't really support me on my horse craziness but they are at least okay with it and i live in singapore and there is not much farm land just tons of apartment blocks. i think that i have to live without horses for years and i borrow lots of books but have not much posters.

Another option I would like to mention is to volunteer at a local therapeutic horseback riding center! You get to work with the program horses and help children with disabilities.

I lived 13 years with horselessness. I finally was able to find a job at a stable where I work to ride. For anyone suffering now, Keep your head up, If there's a Will there's a way :)

Great Article! Lessons are great ways to cope with horselessness, and they aren't as expensive as owning a horse.

I always have a serious case of horselessness during the school year... I only get to ride once a week (or less) because I don't have my own horse, and I can't afford to get lessons more than that. I'm saving my money though, and as soon as I'm old enough I'll be getting a job so I can get a horse!:)
