How To Fly

The wind rushed through my hair, and I landed with a gentle splash on the other side. My wings are invisible, and if you could see them, they would be a glossy chestnut, just like the rest of my body.

“Avro, Avro!” Shouted Liz Collins, my owner. My dream quickly ran away.

“Avro, silly boy. You’re always getting into something, aren't you?” She asked, her dark blonde curls tucked in a neat ponytail, and her dark eyelashes fluttering. A rare smile was dancing across her lips. She opened my heavy iron door, which creaked as she pushed it aside. She then approached me. I responded by flattening my chestnut ears, and made a lunge at her. “Whoa! Not in a good mood today, huh boy?” I glared at her aqua coloured eyes. A slight frown had pushed the smile away, and the true Liz Collins came through. She grabbed a nearby black lunge whip, and it flashed through the air. I closed my eyes and felt a sharp sting on my forehead. I shrieked in pain. This has happened to me nearly every day of my life. Liz had done the same to all her horses, and in the beginning, she had 12. Abuse had worn down their souls, and killed them. I was the only one left.

I was standing up to the window portion of the door in my own filth, I couldn’t even move. It was horrible, but I was not going to surrender to a murderer like her. The whip flashed again, and nearly struck me in the eye. Instead, it hit a nerve, and I screamed as loud as I could. Liz actually looked around, worried that someone might have heard me. Then the whip flashed again, and it struck on the flank, causing me even worse pain because I could not reach it. After 20 minutes, she was confident again, and struck me on my nose. It hurt, more than I could bare. Again, I screamed as loud as I could. But the whip kept coming, the eye, the nose, the eye, the nose! I screamed and screamed as loud as I could! But no one came.

I was skin and bones. Suddenly, I heard a door open in Liz’s house, hollers of “Get down on the ground now!”, and “Liz Collins, you are under arrest.”. I heard the main barn door open, and true sunlight, which I had barely ever seen, flooded in. I kept quiet.
“Dear lord!” Said a pretty red headed lady with a silver, metallic, flashlight. She pointed to the first stall, which had dung a few feet high. The bones of Rainbow were still in there. A man looked as if he was going to fall over.
Another woman with jet-black hair pulled in a tight bun, wearing dark, navy blue clothes, had a flash light as well, and it shone across every stall, each one getting worse. Finally, It stopped on the stall across from me, my good friend Marvie’s stall. The filth in there was only half way up to the window, but was the worst of what they had seen. The man that had nearly fallen over rushed out, and I heard a splash on the ground, along with a chorus of “Scott, are you okay?”.

Finally, the red-head turned the flashlight on me. It dropped to the ground.
“Jason, we may have a live one!” Yelled the blue lady into a walkie-talkie, that was attached to her clothes.

It took two hours, but I finally had my freedom. There was so much manure, that when they opened the door and tried to get me out, I was stuck in a cube of manure! That’s when they injected something into me. The next thing I remember, is waking up in a weird cloth hanging from a hook, I thought she had finally sent me to slaughter, and I was on my way to being chopped. I was wrong. The red head walked up, and smiled when she saw I was awake.
“Well, hello there Avro.” I tensed.
The stall door creaked open. I laid my ears back.
She stepped in. I started to thrash.
Her smile turned to a frown, and she called out, “John, I need the tranquillizer, NOW!”
A man in white robes appeared, with a needle in his hand. He injected it into me somehow, and again everything went black.

This is chapter one, I forgot to add in that in the title. Something I always notice, is that at the end of a TV show, they always leave you hanging at the commercial breaks. I learned, from my father (he owns a store), that they do this so you lay in suspense, so you continue to watch the show. I felt like the title was nice as it was, and that if I added "Chapter 1", it would be to long, and would spoil the title. The next part is coming soon! (mawhaha!)

Learning To Fly
6th Jan 2011   |   Horse Fiction   |   Castaway Wish
I had just cleared a jump, and my wings had folded as I approached the next one. It was a cross-country course, and my next jump was a make-shift water fence. I ramped up my speed and took off, my wings outstretched. ...
