My name is Shadow. These things called “humans” have captured me. I was grazing when the humans roped me and took me from all of my mares. Thankfully, I am at a place called home with my new owner, Melanie. Right now, I’m in my stall, getting tacked up, just like when I was somewhat trained.
“It’s okay Shadow, I’m almost done tacking you up.” Melanie whispered, trying to comfort me. Once she was done, we went to the arena and she jumped up on me. I thought to myself, “this is going to be a long, long day!”
We spent most of the day walking and trotting around, enough to make me dizzy! Then, she started to canter me! We flew around the arena. After that, she loved on me for the first time! It felt good to feel a part of a family. At the end of the day she put me up and gave me these astronomical things called a “treat”. It was so good!
After a month of these daily meetings, I didn’t mind not having the mares around me because I had Melanie. Today she said we were going to “jump”. “Come on Shadow, stop walking so slow!” Melanie shouted with excitement. So, we warmed up after she got on. “We can do this!” she murmured to me, while pointing me at the jump.
I cantered toward it and I actually jumped it! “Good boy, Shadow! You did it! What a smart boy!” Melanie shouted with glee.
Months later, we went to a show! “You ready boy?” Melanie whispered into my ear. I could tell she was nervous. Finally, we entered the arena, “Welcome to the Regional Horse Show. Please walk your horse.” The announcer echoed. “Let’s go get them, Shadow!” Melanie murmured with excitement. We did everything with finesse, but now it was down to jumping.
“Coming up is Melanie Green riding Shadow in the Dusk.” The announcer declared.
We flew over the jumps and at the end, there was a standing ovation. “The winner is...” the announcer said with anticipation. “Melanie Green riding Shadow in the Dusk!” the announcer declared. I reared in excitement. We took a victory lap around the arena. I realized then that I wasn't a captured horse, I was a saved horse! I love Melanie now and could care less about the other mares. I’ve got to go because I’m heading for the Nationals today and I can’t be late! |
