I'm sure you've all heard about horse slaughter and most of you are probably against it, but do you ever think about it, or go into depth about it? Are you truly serious when you say you are against horse slaughter? I admit I'm not a vegetarian and I hate the fact that I as a human eat other animals. But, horses are slaughtered for no reason while cows are slaughtered for human consumption. How many people do you know eat horse meat? So many horses each year worldwide are brutally murdered, and yes this is murder, for they are not going to the slaughter house because we want to eat them. They are going there because their previous owners believe they have no more purpose on this earth! How many of you would do whatever it took to stop horse slaughter.
Here is a predicament to see if you are truly against horse slaughter:
You are given an option between two horses, one of them a seven year old Thoroughbred stallion who has competed at a national level in show jumping or an old, skinny, shy and timid shetland gelding, that has a badly knotted mane and tail. His hooves urgently need shodding, has many injuries, is extremely stubborn and is destined for slaughter.
Most of you would choose the shetland gelding, just to keep your reputation as a horse lover, but some of you wouldn't mean it, deep down inside you know without a second thought you would choose the Thoroughbred stallion.
You would let the shetland gelding arrive at his fate - death. Let me ask you a question for you horse racing fans. At the end of the race do you ever feel pitty on the horse that tried it's best, but its best was not enough. The one that galloped into last place. Do you ever think what will happen to that horse in the coming days?
Horses only want to please us and be our friend, but in return most of them meet a frightful end. Most of you wouldn't send your horses to slaughter, but some people would. What most don't understand about horse slaughter is the horror that takes place in the slaughter house.
First, the horses are loaded onto a trailer and packed so tight to the point where it is a struggle just to breathe. The horses are then placed into pens that are so tight their breathing continues to be stricken. With every breathe they take they also inhale the scent of the previous horses which had been slaughtered.
The scent of fear, The scent of blood, the scent of death.
Sometimes even young foals manage to wind up here and quite often the horses are malnourished and uncared for before they arrive. Humane authorities take no notice of this horrible, death-stricken place. Sometimes the horses aren't even slaughtered successfully. This is truly cruel. People should understand what actually happens at a slaughter house. I hope that today I have given you a better understanding and put more depth into the topic of horse slaughter, as it shouldn't go unseen like it has for so many years. |

Make sure you have your facts correct. Firstly, the trip the horses take are no longer allowed to be in stock trailers. Secondly, the fact that Mexico and off-shore rigs do not have to abide by any laws and/or regulations regarding the treatment of animals, creates a more cruel environment for the horses and other livestock than they would receive here.
Another point is that who ever believes that there is no such thing as an unwanted horse isn't facing reality. I know personally of one person that has had three horses unloaded at different times at the bottom of their driveway. I also know of a person who went to an auction to sell a couple of horses and when they arrived back at the trailer there were three more horses tied to it with a note that said..give us a good home. He couldn't afford to do that either.
I researched extensively into the subject for a college paper. Many more horses are in a detrimental condition due to the fact that there isn't any money to take care of

There are even rescues that are now going under because they cannot afford to take care of the over abundance of removed or abandoned horses.
While I would never partake in the eating of horseflesh. Japan and Germany consume millions of pounds a year. Horseflesh is also used to feed zoo animals such as lions and tigers. There is a place for all animals, however, whether we like it or not, not all horses have loving caring homes as most of us give them. Death would be a kindness to the suffering some horses endure daily.

Ok, I'm totally against slaughter, but some horses actually would be better there. I know that sounds cruel, but we have a kill pen probably half an hour from my dad's house. My friend goes there every once in a while to look at ponies she can re-train. A lot of the horses there arn't worth saving. I'm not saying it to be mean, but it's true. There was a 7 month old appy foal there once, but someone had shot him in the neck and it got an infection, so the owners sold it to the kill pen to get money on a foal that was gonna die...It's not good, not at all, but sometimes it's necessary.

I honestly can say I don't agree.
Call me a murderer. I don't like it one bit, but it needs to be done. Think of all the unwanted horses, mentally dumb horses that can absolutely not have anything done with them, or older ones that are dying, they need to go, and by going to a slaughter house they serve a greater purpose. Sure an amazing prospect, its not fair, but as much as you want to be a hero, and say not all horses are useless, its true. You can't deny there are things that can't work.
And if you think some people don't feeel the same about cows, then think again. There are some people who LOVE cows like we love hroses and hate to see them being eaten.
Its a way of life, we have to eat. Its been this way since we were created.

I completely disagree. Horses used to be shipped outside the US to Europe and Asia, where they are often a main staple of food to many people. Now, instead of being slaughtered, and most were humanely, they are being left to die, and starving to death because people cannot afford to keep them, and the price of putting the horse to sleep and removing the body according to state and federal laws, is too expensive. So instead of these horses no longer suffering in pain and agony for being abandoned, and going on to serve a greater good in life by saving another from starvation, we have horses with no where to go and millions of people with out food, consequently dying of the same problems. And these days, you can't even give horses away for free. I know, because I tried.
Yes, some of the slaughter houses were not humane. But the majority of them were. That is the true problem, is that all people can see are the "poor horses" and not the part of they are no longer feeling pain,

I don't like horse slaughter myself, but where else can they go? there are only so many people who have the resources to take care of a rescue horse.
Not only do we have to change are ways in terms of horses being slaughtered, but also in breeding "backyard ponies" or horses that will never be used.
Have you guys heard of PMU? Pregnant mare urine is used in some products, and so mares are kept in terrible condition, with bags to collect their urine, and bred constantly so that they're still useful. A lot of those foals end up being fattened up, then sold for slaughter...I encourage ponyboxers to do research on these kinds of things!

As a vegetarian I find it interesting you say "the horses are loaded onto a trailer and packed so tight to the point where it is a struggle just to breathe". You see this happens to ALL meat animals. Cows, pigs, lambs, chickens- the lot are packed to maximum capacity in order for an individual to make maximum profit. However, because these animals were unfourtunate enough to be labeled as 'non-domesticated animals' they deserve to be eaten and in turn are thought of as lesser beings in the world eyes.
In the end, what really makes a cow, an animal humans eat as a meat product, that much different to a horse? They both have four legs, a tail, eyes, hearts and brains and are of approximately the same size. So why is it its more acceptable to say 'I eat cow' rather than 'I eat horse'? The only thing that makes a horse different to a cow is the social labeling we as humans have placed upon them. We as humans have decided horses are to be ridden whilst cows are to be eaten.
Whats more

Whats more interesting is when you say "sometimes the horses aren't even slaughtered successfully". Yet again such an occurrence is not limited to the slaughter of horses. It occurs in all areas of the slaughter industry. Chickens destined to be meat on the dinner plate go through a series of procedures to kill them. Their heads are dunked into electrified water designed to kill them- yet some chickens lift their heads. A razor blade then slices their head off- even so some will avoid this and face boiling water jets (which remove the feathers) FULLY conscious. I'm aware this is a horse website, thus your article focuses on horse slaughter, but I think you, and the rest of Ponybox, should be aware of other forms of "acceptable" animal slaughter.
I'm in no way aiming this at your article, I think it's a good article because it will make people discuss controversial issues, I just have a very vocal opinion I wanted to share =)

Some horses need to be sent to the slaughter house.. I am a total Vegitarian and I believe that you should send horses to the slaughter house. Think of this, a horse had been abused and it has a horrible infection that will eventually put it in pain and kill it, but if you send it to the slaughter house, the poor horse is then killed BEFORE the pain. Some "untrainable" horses get sent there unhumanly and yes they are shipped unhumanly. Dreamcatcher is right, horses are unwanted in someplaces, I had a unwanted horse myself! The world isn't perfect and this is one of those imperfections, foals definantly shouldn't be sent there. Some people get the wrong horse and send to the slaughter house, my uncle has a beautiful ranch horse who was sent to be slaughtered, the horse can catch a cow faster than most horses. So some horses are just sent there to be sent there :(. Don't mean to be rude, it was a great story and it needed to be said!

I understand that most of you realise that, in a way, going to the slaughter house could be better for some horses but, I hate it, I would never ever sell a horse to slaughter, and I know that a lot of other animals go through this horrific experience as well and I hate it! it makes me sick sometimes, I hate that we as human beings have to kill other animals to survive, but I cannot stand the thought of horse slaughter, but ccould you imagine being one of those horses, but while you say that slaughter is a good way to end the suffering for horses and that way they can serve another purpose on thise earth, I believe that going to a home with a loving caring owner, or even being euthanased is much more humane than slaughter, but try to think like the horse at the slaughter would, your best friend just sent you to your death, doesn't that just at least make you feel for them, If I could have a horse I know that I would choose a rescue above all others, if the horses have to go through suc

Its really sad, but its true. People send the innocent to death for being old, not trained, ugly colours... I've heard of millions of reasons to send a horse to slaughter, and none of them are bad enough for the consequence. Like Dream Catcher said earlier, make sure you have your facts correct. For the most part your article was amazing, but yes, stock trailers are no longer used etc. Great article though! And for the record, I would pick the poor under-fed mangy pony rather than the young thoroughbred without a second thought. It is instinct to pick the one in need, though I haven't had to choose between animals before.

Some horse should be sent to the Slaughter house, we had one we where going to send until this girl said she wanted him, he would reach for you out of the pen, and bite, he was mean, and strong, and he was a gelding. He told a metal panel and TWISTED it, when he saw one of us walking to water him, because he wanted to cause pain. The girl that we gave him to, didn't do anything with him, and he still tries to get at you.
Some horse's are to mean, and strong to give away, or feel safe around, so it is better to just sell them to the Slaughter house. I have no problem with slaughter house, I own and breed Boer Goats. Which are Meat goats, we get a man to come out a slaughter them, or we send them to a bigger company. And Slaughter places normally buy horses no one bids on at actions, and horses that have a pretty good weight on them, because they are used for meat, and their hoofs for glue. Horses do have a use outside of us riding them. I have ridden a cow, I still eat them. You can't

Deer get shot like 6 times, sometimes when someone is hunting. Do they not suffer as well? Horses are not the only one that have feelings and that suffer. If a horse charged you and tried to kill you, would you keep it? Give it away to someone else that might get hurt? Or send it to the Slaughter house? I think the slaughter house is the best choose.
I would have taken the gelding in a heartbeat. All my horses now are rescue. My mother's horse was found in a junk yard, She has acid burns on her back, and you can barely touch her. My horse was left in a box stall for four years and wasn't fed right. And, my friend's horse, was abused when he was younger, he has a broken jaw, and scars up and down he body.

Okay here is my opion..and oonly that. There is a simple way we can lower the number of horse slaughter in the world, but it would have to be a united effort. I know some people in other countries do infact have horse meat served on the dinner table..and I dont have a problem with that IF the horse was bred for that purpose. and only if. Oh boy.
First of all, this, "But, horses are slaughtered for no reason while cows are slaughtered for human consumption," is completely wrong. Horses are slaughtered for human consumption the same way cows are. Human consumption is not the only thing we make from horse flesh, but people do eat it. And even if we didn't, why would that make a difference between slaughtering a horse and cow?
Horse slaughter is only the "necessary evil" many commenters have made it out to be because we choose for it to be. If we accept it as the "only route" or try to pretend it's somehow more compassionate than euthanasia, we're kidding ourselves and we're making it the only route. We see horses as things, tools, to use at our pleasure. This attitude creates the mentality that is it acceptable to ignore that they are sentient, mindful, thinking creatures with their own needs, wants, and preferences. Look at the comments from some of our fellow "horse lovers" - "a lot of the horses there arn't worth saving," "mentally dumb horses that can absolutely not have anything done with them." Those aren't compassionate things to say (some of them are insulting to human mentally handicapped people) and they exemplify this. Horses are not things. They are not mere tools. They are not cars made of flesh.
If horses are dying, are in pain, or are so dangerous that they cannot safely live in any situation, then we have a solution - painless euthanasia. Don't think for one second that we slaughter horses because it's somehow more compassionate - we do it because there are people who want to make money off it and we let them, or because we are cheap. Euthanasia costs too much? If you can't afford it, you shouldn't have a horse or should inquire about funds set aside to help people who cannot afford vet care. Handling fees for the body are too much? Since the government, in part, sets them, YOU can do something about it.
The point is that by tacitly accepting the situation and buying the hype about it being necessary and kinder and "a part of life", we're creating a situation in which it IS necessary. Humans are ingenious! We flew to the moon, created the internet. Are we saying we can't find a compassionate solution to the theorized horse overpopulation problem?

I'd choose the Shetland in a heartbeat, not to keep horsey reputation, because otherwise It would have an un nessicary death, anyway a thoroughbred would be too tall for me, my cat was rescued from a bin (Better than going to be slaughtered).

my thoughts on horse slaughter:
just becasue big horse showers cant use a horse, does NOT mean its useless. as all! no horse in this world is useless. no one. you can argue all you want, but if a horse is ingered, you can heal its wounds and use it for a buddy for your current horses.
yeah, you might think its sucking up money you dont have, its one horse that you could put to pasture for the summer on grass (if you dont already have grass, problem) and in the winter give him a handful or two of grain/oats. of coarse he'll need hay. if you have extra land that is just grass, let grow out and bail it for hay.
another idea is to give it to a young girl/boy to just walk around a pasture for joy, have pony rides maybe.
you may think horse slaughter is an easy way to get some easy money, but its not, sell him for a pasture horse or young girl/boy for pony rides.

if you think horse slaughter is good or needed, LOOK YOUR BELOVED HORSE IN THE EYE AND SAY AND TRY SAYING 'HORSE SLAUGHTER IS NOT BAD.'

Good story, but i must also say that they are letting these horses that no one wants any more free in to mountains and also in Kentucky state park, where they will be in greater danger of starving or worse being hit buy a car, so in my mind i think it is better to have slaughter than having people loose their lives by hitting a horse. Now i do agree that they need to create a better way of slaughtering horses, but if you think of it, they may be saving lives of starving people. Now think about it do you know whats in that hamburger that you eat at a fast food joint? You probably don't, for all you know you may be eating that horse mixed with beef to cover up the flavor, In all terms horse meat is actually a very lean meat and is also better for you than beef.

Slaughter is a necessary evil, as is euthanasia for dogs. Until people stop irresponsibly breeding animals that need-not be bred, there will always be horses destined for slaughter. Thus is life.

i totally agree i hate horse slaughter. Its cruel and mean.
but in france people eat horse meat like we eat cow meat.i still hate it though.
I would definatly choose the shetland.Even if i would be a better competitor on the thoroughbred i couldnt live knowing i could of saved a horse and i didnt.I would try to train and help the shetland untill he is ready to be sold to someone who can ride him as i am to tall. But i would make sure he is going to a good happy home

Horses ARE slaughtered for consumption, and there are laws etc about mistreatment. It's the same with all animals. But the majority of stories you hear about horses slaughtered for no reason and I DO find it sick, but there are like twice as many alive and well horses in the world and hundreds of people doing something to stop it.

Great story, it does need to be said. I watched animal farm(2004) and the horse is sent of to slaughter.
But for horses that no-one wants(sadly) or might have broken legs or wounds never to heal other ways the world would soon become over-crowded
its wrong but sometimes its nesscary

My boy Steel was going for meat. I was looking for a jumper but instead got a gangly yearling. Did I get what I came for/wanted/ No. Did I save a life? Yes.
