The girls quieted down and listened. The horses ears pricked to the left, indicating to the girls where the source of the sound was from. "Well," Mollie asked, "Are we just going to stand here or what?" all the girls started at a trot toward the sound. Just peering around the bushes, Mollie caught a glimpse of a beautiful black horse, with obvious Arabian bloodlines. The horse looked back with a familiar face. Where had Mollie seen that face?
The horse seemed friendly enough, so Mollie decided to take a closer look. Eagle gave a whinny to the horse, and the horse responded with a snort. Once Mollie got about twenty feet from him, she noticed something. A brand, with the letters "PGS". She realized, all of a sudden, that Eagle had the same brand, but that could only mean one thing. "Shadow!" she exclaimed. Shadow had gotten loose about two years ago. They had searched and searched, but to no avail.
"Shadow, baby! How are you?" The others girl looked in wonder at each other.
"Mollie," Sarah asked "how do you know this horse?" Mollie was sidetracked, though. "Anyone have rope, or something? I've got to get Shadow home."
Eventually, they found some rope. Making a makeshift lasso, Mollie led Shadow all the way home.
When they got back, Sarah, June, and Hope pounded Mollie with questions. "So, about two years ago, Shadow was out in the paddock when some wind blew through. It knocked over one of the fence sections, and Shadow got loose. Not much more to say."
Mollie started to say "I wonder......", but thinking alike, Hope said "No way. This horse will not be ready for the show. She hasn't been ridden for two years!" Mollie still couldn't shake the thought from her head.
Mollie woke the next morning, sweating and shaking from a nightmare. in her dream, she was competing in the show, but had found one of the horses being abused by their owner. Mollie had caught them, but Shadow had run off, so she couldn't escape. The owners caught her "snooping around" and locked her up! Shaking the nightmare off, she darted from bed, skipping breakfast. She just realized tomorrow was the show! She had seemingly millions of things to do! Grooming, washing, braiding, packing....the list went on. She rushed out to Eagle, wishing she didn't feel so rushed.
"Hey baby," she cooed "how are you?" Eagle snorted, and then stomped his hoof. "No, I don't have anything for you, sorry." Mollie laughed. She clipped Eagle to the lead rope and took him to the stables sole indoor wash station. Eagle seemed to be a bit agitated at the thought of a bath. When he gave a little irritated swish of his tail, Mollie knew exactly what Eagle was thinking. She loved that about him. He would really let you know what he was thinking or feeling. After hours of washing, grooming, braiding, packing, and last minute oh-I-forgot's, Mollie was ready - and exhausted. She went to go to see Shadow. Shadow seemed extremely agitated, for reasons unknown to Mollie. Thinking she could soothe him, she tried to go in with a few treats. Suddenly, Shadow lashed out, and the world went black. |
