First, I want to start off by saying that this tutorial is not the way to make digital art. It is how I make digital art. Everyone has their own style. You will eventually make your own as you progress, recognizable at a moment’s glance. I can't count the number of times people have taken the time out of their life to tell me that I am 'doing this wrong' and that I 'need to change the way you do that.' My way. Not the way.
Now, off to basics I'm going to share with you some important vocabulary which you will need to know throughout the Market and in every graphic you make.
Lineart
99% of them are black lines unfilled on a transparent or white background. Guidelines for your image you will create.
Digi/Digital
Start-from-scratch art, probably using a lineart. This is what my tutorial is about.
Graphic
General term for art made using some sort of electronic, like a computer.
Manip/Manipulation
Photographs are altered and stacked on top of one another to create a new image.
Know those and you won’t run into any trouble. As for the program I use? GIMP. It is free to download, and if you download it from the GIMP website there are no viruses or bugs or anything. As far as I have seen it is as good as any fancy-pants expensive program. I highly recommend it. My tutorial uses GIMP pictures and measurements.
Before you dive into the tutorial, look at horse photographs. Note the muscles, the proportions, the highlights, the shadows, the bones. I taught myself everything know by looking at photographs and studying the anatomy, or structure, of the horse, and trying to replicate it in my art. Every day I improve on one part or another. Now I will stop poking the keys on my keyboard and show you the tutorial.
If you have any questions or comments or suggestions feel free to message me, I don't bite |

Very good tutorial! It's good to see people drawing their own lineart and honing their skills rather than using the same lines that have been circulating the internet for ages. It shows a lot of creativity and ambition. You're a very good artist!
I might reccomend more detailing on your manes/tails in the future in addition to more use of real colors (rather than the dodge/burn) but you have a wonderful style either way. I think people will really appreciate this tutorial! Tres Bien!

Hello Ponyboxers, many of you were asking about manes and tails and whatnot, and here they are! Hopefully you have been good and have practiced shading a horse's body.
If you have not seen my first tutorial, you should look it ...
