The large gray Thoroughbred breezed along the inside fence. His jockey whipped him to many times to count. The jockey slowed the horse at the 3/4 mile pole and pulled him to a stop by the trainer and owner.
"He won't run, Mr. Gray," the jockey said settling the frisky horse.
"I see that," the owner was furious that he might lose the big race at Churchill Down tomorrow. "Run him again."
"But, Mr. Gray, the horse has been running for over an hour," the jockey was the most caring person the stallion had.
"Taylor, I don't what to fire you, now run that horse!"
"Yes, sir," the jockey tapped the horse side and he ambled off.
Alex Taylor lined the stallion up near the gates.
"If you wanna see your stall today, you better run," Alex whispered to the horse. "Go!" he shouted. The horse sprinted off. The stallion ran faster than most horses, but to the owner, it was nothing. The gray stallion zoomed past the 1/2 mile mark and struggled from fatigue to keep going. The horse couldn't go anymore. He fell to his knees and Alex Taylor flew 60 feet from the falling point. The stallion layed on his side and Alex had blacked out. Mr. Gray and Tom Greene, the trainer, ran to Alex.
"Alex! Alex!" they couldn't wake him.
The vet who had kept an eye on this poor stallion for as long as he raced, ran to him.
"Esprit, easy easy.." the vet tried to keep the stallion from hurting himself, "No, no stay down," Esprit tried to stand but collapsed back down. Out of her bag, th vet retrieved a tranquilizer and jabbed it in the horses shoulder. Almost instantly, Esprit fell asleep on the damp track.
"Mr. Gray, I know you think the horse is useless, but he can run the race next month," Alex told the owner.
"Taylor, I dont know what you think your doing telling me my buisness," the owner warned.
"Gray, I think the boys right. In a month, theres a sweapstakes at Churchill. Bigger purse then tomorrows race, enter that!" the trainer chimmed in. He knew the large value in Esprit and racing him in the sweapstakes would raise his value.
"Where do you think im going to get the money to keep a useless horse for a month. Already got vet bills to be payed. Wheres the money comin' from?" the owner was furious.
"The sweapstakes," Tom answered.
"I heard its around 3.5 million," Alex pointed out.
"Enough! He's going for meat," and with that, the owner disappered through the door.
Esprit was loaded on to the double decker. He reared eight times but collapsed each time. The drivers whipped the horse every time he trembled to his feet. Esprit called loudly over the other horses whinnies.
"Shut up," the driver swore under his breath. He whipped Esprit and he jumped into the trailer.
"Wait! Mr. Thomas!" A lady yelled waving a piece of paper.
"What now? Ive only got fifteen hours to get to Mexico!" he turned around.
"I have a paper for these horses," the sweet lady gave the man the paper.
"ALL of the horses?" the driver was mortified.
"Yes, I am taking them to numerous horse rescues around Kentucky. This paper was signed by the government, you must give them all to me. Oh, and the trailer."
"What?!" the driver was angry.
"Only temporarily,"
Esprit was unloaded at a very large farm with a huge field. Esprit had never seen so much green. The petite lady let the stallion rear than steadily led him to a large and safe field. After telling the woman in charge of Blizzard Animal Rescue she turned him out, she drove away with still over one hundred and twenty-five horses.
For two weeks, Esprit was in a field. Left alone beside the one time a day when he was given a warm apple, molasses, and oat mash and two leafs of hay. Esprit had five acres to himself. He enjoyed the peace and was very happy with himself. After two weeks and three days since he was dropped off at BAR, he was put up for adoption. And almost Immedeatly, he was adopted by Dona Henson. It was arranged for Esprit to be picked up the next day. |

I like the story. The jockey flying 60 feet seems unrealistic. Maybe a typo? Did you mean 6 feet instead? Can't wait to read more of Espirit's story.

If you have Breyer Horses, you know the love that we share with them. Breyers are amazing little plastic figures. They let the ones who can't afford horses live out their dream with barns, tack, riders, and other accessories.
