Have You Heard Of Jumpcross? The newest Equine Discipline
 By Estella Noire   •   8th Feb 2011   •   7,858 views   •   31 comments
Jump Cross is a new equestrian sport. It was first invented by Robin Dunlop who spent a lot of his time building cross country courses. Jump Cross is a sport like Cross Country but instead of usual Cross Country jumps, the jumps are knock down fences like those used in Show Jumping.

The winner is the fastest round, but the jumps need accuracy so you can't gallop around the whole course. If the pole falls or a horse refuses then time penalties are awarded.

The Penalties

> Knock-down - 20 penalties for each knock-down.
> Refusal - 50 penalties for each refusal. (Two refusals at the same fence and you will be asked to move on to the next fence).
> 6 refusals around the course - Elimination
> Rider fall - Elimination
> Horse fall - Elimination

There are also a few joker fences and the rider can chose whether they would like to jump it or not. If you manage to clear the joker fence, 40 seconds is taken off your time. If you fail however, double time penalties are given.

----

Jump Cross is perfect for riders building up to cross country or for inexperienced horses as it is a lot safer for both horse and rider since solid fences can damage your horses legs if they do not clear it.

There are competitions for both children and adults. The youngest you can be is 7 years old. Riders must wear hard hats, body protectors etc. The youngest your horse can be is 5 years old to compete. JumpCross only allows running martingales to be worn by your horse, and only Cavesson, Flash, Drop or Grakle nosebands are to be worn.

So why not give Jump Cross a go? Itís perfect as a first competition. To find a Jump Cross event near you and for training information go to www.jumpcross.com.
