Arabella and Me - Part 1

Arabella and Me

My muscles ripped as I galloped across the golden fields with my girl on my broad back. Our hearts beat in perfect harmony which matched the splendor of my pounding hooves. My neck was arched to gain as much speed as I could. Her small hands gripped my silky mane as we raced the warm yet crisp early summer wind. We were inseparable.

The sound of her gentle breathing calmed my every nerves. To have her on my back was like having an angel upon me. It was like being the carrier of the most important and delicate creature in this whole world, the one who I loved the most. Her legs were tightly gripping around me and she lifted her arms into the air. I was her freedom and she was mine. The world passed by like lighting and my silvery coat gleamed in the bright morning sunlight. The rays of sun kissed her rosy cheeks making her light freckles bloom across her glowing face. Her voice was angelic and her touch was like a feather.

I looked up to see the stream leading to home only yards in front of us. I didn't have enough time to turn before we hit it. I could feel her arm still in the air and I sensed her eyes were closed. I didn't know what to do. Either way I knew she was going to fall. I stopped right in front of the creek and she flew off over my neck. I let out a piercing whinny as a scream quickly escaped her throat before landing in the shallow but deathly water.

She was silent.

The only noise I heard was the slight bubbling of the creek and the soft wind blowing through the leaves. My heart stopped. Red liquid seeped from her head and into the creek turning the water a terrifying crimson color. I stepped cautiously into the water being careful not to step on her fragile body. I nuzzled her hair and nickered softly but she remained still and silent.

Something was very wrong. I nosed her chin and then her arms but the result was nothing. I tilted my head wondering why she wasn't responding to me. Maybe she was playing hide-and-seek like many times before. I stepped backwards out of the creek and turned prancing away. When I glanced back she did not move. Her arms were sprawled out and her golden hair lay dirty and blood stained in the creek water. I nickered for her but she would not answer me. Her angelic voice did not fill the air nor did her sweet touch reach out for me. I turned back towards the creek. I could smell home and knew my way back. I gently stepped around her and then took off into a lumbering canter through the trees, dodging all the obstacles that tried to restrain me from getting back to the place called home.

When I reached home I let out a loud ear piercing whinny and the one they called 'Joe' came running out of the barn. I pranced back and forth uneasily and shook my head hoping he would know I needed help. He ran back into the barn and I chased after him. He came back out with the one they called 'Dad' who was leading Kay, a bright bay mustang mare. I stood tall compared to her, my legs were much longer and I wasn't even close to as stocky as she was. He mounted her quickly and said something to Joe which I didn't quite understand, he was talking much to fast and quietly. He rode her up to me and I let out a squeal before cantering in the direction of the creek where my girl, Arabella lay.

I looked back to make sure he was following and he was. When we reached the creek I noticed how Arabella had turned a strange shade of white. I nuzzled her cheek but Dad pushed me away and yelled harshly at me. He lifted her up and laid her across Kay's back. He then mounted her and took off back towards the house. Leaving me helpless and confused.

How come he wouldn't let me touch her? I wondered. She was my girl. Did he think I hurt her? I would never hurt her, she was the only thing I loved and lived for. I followed them back keeping a slight distance but my eyes were fixed on the motionless pale girl in Dad's arms. When we arrived at the house Joe swung a lead line around my neck then restrained me with my leather halter. He pushed me into my stall and latched the door shut leaving me alone. I whinnied for my sweet Arabella but she did not come.

I stuck my slender silvery head out my stall's small window to see Dad carrying her away towards the house. Something was very wrong, her body was limp and her arms hung lifelessly swinging with every quick, wide step Dad took. Joe scurried after them. I let out another strong whinny, why wasn't she listening to me? Nothing seemed right. I kicked at my stall door with all my might. Kay looked over at me with fear in her eyes but I continued to pound on the door with my strong hooves. I was determined to get to my girl. I screeched loudly and slammed my whole body into the strong hinged door. It wouldn't give way. I looked out the window to see Joe come running out of the house. I pounded my hooves on the door once again and when he came close my nostrils flared and my ears pinned. Where was my girl? He stepped towards the stall and I bore my teeth in anger. He took up a lead line and popped me on the nose with it, which made me squeal. I stepped back in the stall and my eyes were fixed on him.

"Calm down Crook." He said in a soft but angry voice.

Something wasn't right, not right at all. Joe never would have acted this way towards me. I needed to know what was going on. I reared up angry that they took my girl away and wouldn't let me see her. He lashed the lead line at me again but this time it hit my stomach and it stung badly. I landed back on all four feet and pinned my ears. Why couldn't he understand that I needed Arabella? She always understood me, why couldn't he? I wasn't going to give up. I had to get to her. I kicked at the stall door again my eyes still fixed on Joe. He backed away slightly when the wood began to splinter. "Crook!" He snarled as he picked up a crop. I did deserve that crop but I didn't care. I continued to pound on the door with my mighty hooves, all my power and might went into breaking that door to pieces.

Right now it was my worst enemy the only thing between me and Arabella. Splintered pieces from my rage were scattered on the floor of the barn and Joe's eyes were filled with fear. I finally broke free, I had to find Arabella.
