Divorce Leaves Lame Horse Without Care
 By lovehorse   •   19th Mar 2011   •   4,221 views   •   26 comments
My First Horse ShowIt was the day me and my yard family were going to Manchester. We were going to a viewing of a pony. I was so excited, I just knew that this was going to be the pony for me!

The drive was long and tiresome. Listening to the same, repetitive CD over and over again. When we finally arrived at the long cobble stone yard drive I looked across the fields scanning the landscape for the first look at the pony of my dreams.

We got out of the car and met the owners, they seemed to be reasonably friendly people. There was a mother, her daughter and her son. The mother explained that she had recently had a divorce and no longer had the money to keep the horses. Her kids were as moody as a raincloud and didn't share a smile. But I didn't blame them since their parents were divorcing and all their horses would soon be gone.

We were first introduced to the sire of the pony we were here to see. On his back sat the boy, turned backwards with no helmet. After a quick glance at the sire I wondered off to search for the pony I was here for. He was beautiful, a pure white (gray) pony with big eyes and a sort of smile that welcomed me. I stroked the pony's long nose happily and called my dad and instructors over to have a look.

Afterwards the owners tacked him up and led him to the sand school. First the woman lunged him and he looked alright,

but something was wrong.

Then the daughter rode him, still something was not right. Next it was my turn, I mounted in the sadddle and straightened my position, straight back, heels down and toes up to the sky. The saddle was ill-fitted and was forcing me to lean back. The same thing happened when the daughter rode him. He kept on going into a toilet position, but his saddle was postured so badly he didn't need the toilet as he wasn't going.

His back was hurt and my family knew it for sure. 'That poor pony!' I thought as I unmounted and stroked him on the shoulder and whispered.

"Good boy, I'll make sure someone is informed of your condition, so you can get some help."

So much for reasonably kind owners. He was lame and we just couldn't let him suffer like that. So my instructor told the woman a few days later of the ponies injuries and the woman went mad.

The woman sending texts back to us that read, 'Don't tell me how to look after my horses and ponies!'

We reported them and we haven't heard any status to date.

Those poor horses. Divorce is not a reason for abusing animals. At least she was trying to find them a new home where they would be better cared for. But they can't find those homes if she isn't at least taking care of them. Hope they get a better life soon, if they haven't already.

I've been in a situation where care was questioned (my horse got strangles on our tour of working at this ranch and when we got home he'd lost weight due to the illness) and perhaps they were taking good care of the horse, too often we jump to conclusions. If this was the truth of the matter, I'm glad you reported it, sounds like kissing spine to me..but hopefully just a saddle issue.
