Rein For Christmas

At the age of seven I started volunteering at Elliott Acres Therapeutic Riding Center. I would go on Wednesday and Saturdays from 8AM to 8PM. Elliott Acres is a therapeutic riding center where we had about 20 riders. There are riders from ages two years old and even a couple in their seventies. When I started there I learned how to muck stalls, water, feed and how to take basic care of a horse. I also learned how to walk beside the riders and assist them with their reins.

Rein For ChristmasThen, several years later we got a new horse for the program. Rein was a twenty year old Paint mare that came from a home where her owners could not take care of her any longer. She had patches of brown and white all over body and a white blaze down her face. Her mane was all white and her tail was bi-colored. We didn't know much about her history, but we did learn that when she was younger she did barrel racing and pole bending. When you would ride her she would try and take you in the center and go around the barrels that were set up for the riders. Then we noticed she would trip sometimes when she was walked or trotted. Apparently, when she was a gamer and they ran her hard which resulted in her bad knees.

When we first got her I rode her to make sure she was calm and safe for the riders. We used her for about a year as a program horse, but her tripping got worse and she would put the riders off balance. We decided to retire her from the program, but none of us wanted to find her another home. We were all very attached to her.

Then one day I went to the barn and the lady who owns the program made me a deal. She would give me Rein for Christmas in exchange for helping two extra days a week. So I talked to my parents and they said I could have her. I was so excited to get my first horse. Over the previous summer my Dad was working on a barn at home so when we found this horse it worked out perfectly.

I helped at the riding center the two extra days a week as agreed and did barn work to earn her keep. I'm home schooled so I would go over every Tuesday and Friday for two hours in addition to the other days I was already helping. If I got the barn work done quickly, then I was able to ride Rein in the ring or trails. I would spend my allowance to get her supplements to help with her knees.

Then a couple weeks before Christmas my Dad finished the barn. We borrowed a horse trailer and Dad hauled Rein home. I was so excited to finally have a horse and have her home for Christmas. When I got her home I walked her around her new pasture and let her eat. Then I showed Rein her new stall and the rest of her new home. We brought her home in the morning and I stayed with her in the barn all day. Every day I would go down and groom her and I would spend time in the barn with her.

On Christmas Day I went down to feed her and did barn work. Then I pulled out my Santa hat and got Christmas pictures of her and myself together. For Christmas I got new brushes and other barn supplies. Rein is and always will be my favorite Christmas gift.
