Arabella and Me - Part 2

Arabella and Me

Joe ran after me and grabbed my halter with a firm grip I squealed and lashed out at him. My shoulder stung as he swatted my silver coat with the crop. I reared but he was tall enough to still have a hold on my black leather halter. I swung my head back and forth but he swatted me again. "Easy!" He demanded. The tone he used wasn't all authority - it was mostly fear.

I heard a loud wailing noise loud enough to be heard from the barn which was a good distance from the house. It was the one they called 'Mom'. Where was Arabella? I still wondered. I felt something strange, my heart wasn't beating in perfect harmony as it used to.

I whinnied sharply, screaming Arabella!

I ripped away from Joe's firm grasp and bolted out the barn doors. I looked around quickly and whinnied. She still didn't answer. Where was she? I heard the wailing noise again. What was going on? Then a loud bleeping noise sounded and lights flashed. I watched somewhat in shock as men rushed towards the house. Seconds later they came out with Arabella strapped to a rolling bed. They were trying to load her into some kind of trailer.

I charged towards them and let out a deafening scream. I ran one completely over but then I was stopped by a strong rope around my neck. I was pulled back and sweat collected on my silver coat as I tried to break free. More ropes caught around my legs and I let out a sharp piercing whinny. They were taking her away. A sharp pain entered my side and I looked back to see a man sticking something into me.

A few minutes later...
The next thing I remember I was in a trailer. I stood up on shaky legs. Where was Arabella? Those men took her away! I pounded my hooves on the floor of the metal trailer. Where were they taking me. I must have been asleep for a long time because soon we pulled into what looked like a horse farm, but there were rows and rows of huge white tents. I pulled my nose back into the trailer when I smelled a very foul smell. I shook my mighty head and then lowered it. Why had they taken me away from Arabella?

The truck stopped and the trailer door swung open to reveal light and sunshine. I was so relieved when I saw the golden rays. They reminded me of Arabella's long golden hair. I stepped towards the open door, Joe and another man waited both with leather lead lines which had chains on them. Arabella never put chains on me. I backed away somewhat afraid but Joe caught my halter and clipped the lead line across my nose. I shook my head as the cold metal touched my sensitive skin. Joe pulled my head down "Easy!" He growled. Joe had never acted this harsh and cold before. I couldn't figure out what was wrong. I looked around for Arabella. Where are you Arabella? I whinnied. She didn't answer.

Joe pulled me out of the trailer and started to lead me in to one of the tents. Maybe she was in one of those! I thought. When we got in I saw hundreds of other horses. Large ones and small ones. Skinny ones and fattened ones. Old and young, males and females. I had never seen anything like this. I backed away slightly when one lashed out at me. A large man swatted the horse on the nose and my eyes widened. Joe pulled me along and then shoved me into a stall. I tried to get out but my chest was up against cold metal. I whinnied but there was no answer from my girl.

"She's gone Crook." Joe said coldly "You killed her, she's never coming back!"

I pinned my ears and let out a small whimpering sound. I backed up and lowered my head when Joe said "She's dead, Arabella is dead."

I was angry. I flailed my hooves at him and my nostrils flared. He was lying! I told myself. She couldn't be dead. She was my angel. I kicked the wall of the stall I was in. The horse next to me whinnied and kicked his also. A man rushed up to him and hit him with a whip. He let out a squeal and stopped as quickly as he started. I backed up into the corner of my stall, still snorting and breathing hard. Joe threw me some hay and then walked away with a grunt. I whinnied after him but he didn't turn around. I lowered my head and for the first time accepted defeat. She was gone.
