Can You Hear Me? - Part 8
 By Unique   •   20th Sep 2011   •   2,943 views   •   16 comments
Horse StoryI turned and walked toward the barn. Figuring I’d find something to pain with in there. When I got there I turned the corner and leaned against the door. Relieved that I was away from Mac finally. I dropped the nickname I had given him because it sounded too friendly. I didn’t want to get too friendly with him, so I wasn’t going to. I didn’t want him as a friend. It would be too hard. I was scared, terrified of loosing him. Like a lost everyone else. The only difference from everyone else was that Mac heard me. He saw me. He knew I existed. Unlike my parents at some points. Sym knew I existed. Sometimes I thought he was the only one that knew. Sadly we have to face the truth sometimes. The truth to me was that no one loved me. No one at all. At least no one that I knew of.

Glancing around the large barn I spied the tack room. I hesitantly walked over to it and turned the knob. As I walked in I breathed in a breath of dust which resulted in a violent coughing fit. When I caught my breath I switched on the light and pushed away cobwebs that hung across the room. It looked like no one had been in it for years. Maybe even since the Grey’s left. Everything was worn and the tack that was hung on the racks was covered in at least three inches of dust. Stepping forward I reached a hand out and brushed the dust particles off of an English saddle. Tilting my head I studied the old bridles, saddles, girths and saddle pads. Why had they left this all here? The smell of leather still wafted about the room. And made me smile. For some reason I had always loved the smell of leather. Turning around I looked back out the door before walking towards it. I stepped out and closed the door behind me. Knowing I should probably get to work I looked around for anywhere there would be paint and a paintbrush. Once I found some I grabbed the bucket of white paint and a big paintbrush. This looked like it would work. As I lugged the bucket out of the barn I found myself looking around cautiously for Mac. When he was no where in sight I scurried over to the fence Sym was grazing behind. Of course he was as beautiful as usual.

“Hello Handsome!” I called to the stallion.

Setting the paint bucket down on the outside of the fence I popped the bucket open. When I stirred the paint with the paintbrush I pulled it back out and stroked the side of the fence with it. Sym’s ears pricked up when he heard me singing You Are My Sunshine in a soft, soothing voice. I slid under the fence after making sure no one was watching. Once inside the pasture I left the paintbrush in the bucket. The paint didn’t seem to be any good anyways, so why waste time painting with paint that wouldn’t dry, or end up being no good. A smile tugged at my lips when Sym slowly walked toward me. His long legs taking the ground over in short strides. When he stopped inches away from me I reached out and stroked his face with my small hand.

“How ya doing today boy?” I whispered in question.

Sym leaned into my touch and I could feel his hot breath on my face. It was the best feeling. A feeling of trust, but why did he trust me already? It was odd to me that he trusted me after only seeing me a few times. I leaned forward and pressed my forehead against his, between his eyes. It was like we had a connection, one like I had never seen. I reached up slowly with my other hand and placed it on his other cheek.

“You’re a good boy aye?” I whispered softly before kissing his velvety nose.

Sym whinnied softly and nudged me with his head. I smirked and scratched him behind the ears lovingly. His chestnut ears flickered at my every touch and I could feel him shift slightly. This massive creature was the only one who loved me. What right did I have to say no one loved me? Sym loved me. I knew he did. I was the only one he trusted after all, and he was the only one I trusted. I didn’t want to loose this horse. That was all I knew. I had already lost Antic and if I were to somehow loose Sym... Shaking the thought from my head I closed my eyes and let out a deep breath. It wasn’t before long that I turned when I heard people whispering. Glancing over my shoulder I eyed Mac and his grandfather with an uncertain glare. How long had they been standing there watching me? It embarrassed me to some degree. Feeling my cheeks heat up I stepped away from Sym and ran my hand down his neck before patting it affectionately.

“Go on now.” I told him lovingly before stepping back again. I watched Sym’s deep brown eyes run over Mac and Mr. Harris before he threw a buck, knocking me onto the ground. I scrambled away and tried to gather oxygen again. Sym ran off bucking and squealing. Before I knew it Mac had dropped down to his knees by my side. I shoved him away when I felt his hands on my waist trying to help me up.

“Leave me alone Mac!” I hissed before slowly clambering to my feet. Feeling a hand on my bicep I shook it off before stepping back again.
“Goodness, I’m fine!” I exclaimed and rolled my eyes at him. “If you hadn’t been watching me everything would have been fine!” I told him angrily. Still I couldn’t find out why Sym was so afraid of Mac and his grandfather. Eyes narrowing I stepped up to Mac and looked up at him. “Why is Sym so afraid of you?” I asked him tilting my head to the right.

“He’s not afraid of m-” Mac started but of course I had to cut him off.
“Why does he run every time you’re near?” I asked him accusingly.
Mac shifted awkwardly, “He was abused Pilot.” He told me chewing his lip.
“By who, Mac?”
“His previous owners.”
“He’s not a beast you know.”
“You’ve proved that.”
“So don’t treat him like one.” I fought him with a slight glare.
“How are we supposed to teach him like a normal horse when he is constantly trying to kill us?” Mac asked me, tone now tense.
“He wouldn’t try to kill you if you would understand him!” I hissed in retaliation.
Mac swallowed hard. “What do you mean?”
“If you would just see that he’s afraid because he’s different. Because he’s had to protect his own heart for all of his life. He’s been alone and afraid. He needs someone to trust and someone to love him. Because he’s going through life alone and all he knows is fear and loneliness. He needs someone to believe in him. He needs someone to hear him. Why can’t you see that?” I didn’t even take a breath between my words. That was when I realized what I had just said explained my life, how I felt. Sym was me.

Mac’s eyes searched mine for a moment before he ran his tongue over his front teeth. “I’m sorry you feel that way Pilot.” He whispered.
“I wasn’t talking about me!” I tried to cover up before shifting to my other foot.
“How do you know that horse so well then? That you know exactly what to say about him?” Mac asked me still in a whisper.

He got me. He knew I was talking about myself. Even though I wished he hadn’t known he did. Swallowing hard I closed my eyes for a moment. “Just understand him, work slowly toward him. Love him, don’t treat him differently... believe in him.” I replied softly.

“I do believe in you.” Mac whispered and ran a hand through his hair. “Pilot, I haven’t known you for very long. But I know you’re different. I know you’re sweet, smart, loving, brave, kind, and have a unique personality.”

I felt tears stinging at my eyes but blinked them away. “Thank you Mac.” I managed to say before I could feel my bottom lip trembling. I had to force myself not to cry, it would be very embarrassing.

Then I stiffened. I had to get away, or I was going to become attached. I just had to get away. Stepping back I forced a smile before turning and walking away toward the fence again. I could hear Mac following me but didn’t pay any attention to him. Not being able to let myself stop I kept walking. Sliding under the fence I turned to the driveway and walked down. Walked away. And kept walking. Not looking back.
