Romania's Last Wild Horses Sent To Slaughter
|
|
I live in Romania, where I can honestly say people love horses, and they have proved it. This May I was watching television and saw a terrible thing was happening in my country. Fifty horses from the Letea Forest where about to die! On the internet, lots of horse-lovers where signing petitions and, I have to admit, I was one of them. I couldn't believe what was happening. Romania's last wild horses were being sent to slaughter. Those fifty horses where the last wild horses from Romania. Other countries were proud if they had wild horses, but i was embarrassed at what my country was about to do.
The "owners" of these horses decided to sell them to a slaughter house. Photos of the horses were posted all over the internet. They were thin, injured and not free at all! In addition, these horses turned out to be more important than we thought. These wild horses, untouched by man could be an important source in the future as as a pure breeding stock to Romania's domesticated horses that over time become more susceptible to disease, illness and deformities.
Why did these "owners" want to sell the horses to the slaughter house? Because they are destroying the plant life from the Letea Forest! Are these plants worth the lives of fifty horses?
Unfortunately, some horses died on their way to the slaughter house. But the protests from all over the country saved some of them. The Vier Pfoten Romania Foundation took custody of the horses. These animals now live on a farm near Braila, Romania.
Out of this situation rose a "hero of the horses" from the Letea Forest. His name is Kuki Barbuceanu, and he was the first one to make public the story of these horses. He works for the Vien Pfoten Foundation, and he said he found out about what was going to happen to the horses from a man that lived near the forest.
"I called my friend, doctor Stefan Raileanu, and I told him all about the horses. He got more information and called me the next day. He said that the story was true." sais Kuki.
The authorities declined to take care of the horses, so the Vier Pfoten foundation is now the "owner" of the remaining forty-one wild horses.
this August, the horses were released back in the Letea forest. They are now in good condition, and safe from extinction. But the most beautiful part of this story is that a filly was born. Her name is Soltana. Soltana proves that nature can win and exist in harmony with people. There is a saying in Romania that "All is good when it ends good!"
Maybe kids from other countries will not understand me, but I am really proud. Why? Because I found out that in my country there are still enough people who care about horses as much as I do. And more importantly, they acted together and made a difference. |

I think it is really great what happen! I wish here in America there could be such a happy story. Its ironic that just today it was on the news that the 5 year no slaughter banned will be uplifted and in 30-90 days America could once again be slaughtering horses. The sickest part is that millions of tax payers will have to pay for this. I'd hate to think my money was going to such a thing. :*(

Really glad to hear there was a happy ending to this story.
We have New Forest Ponies that still roam wild in the New Forest. Every year a few are gathered up just to keep numbers down as they can be pretty destructive. I see where the owner of the forest was coming from there.
But it is still wrong. Keeping the wild horses keeps genetic diversity, especially now a days when everything is selectively bred so much.

Thats such a relief, wild horses are becoming rare and shouldn't be killed because of eating some plant.
I'm just glad they are OK now (:

The thing is no one wants to take a wild horse and break it in today's state. Even though they could buy it cheap they don't want do the training themselves for the wild horses temperment. Yup horses get sent to slaughter sad deal, but it would help the economy a bit. Especially sending horses that aren't useful at all and are just costing you money. Yes I see if someone wants to spend money to see the horse of their life and dreams be helped not many people have that choice and the money to do it. Everythin today revolves around the economy and it sucks, you have to do what has to be done. And think of it this way, even though a horse lover wouldn't want to eat horse meat ( I personally think it would be disgusting) there are other countries out there have problems with hunger. We could send the meat over to them and let them eat it so they don't die of starvation. A horse could save lives i think if that were to happen.

You had me scared there for a moment! It's an awful thing to think about. I am really glad that there were other horses saved and set free to become a huge herd. (well thats how I picture it)
