My High-Strung Purebred Arabian
|
|
When I was about 10 years old, a purebred Arabian filly was born on our ranch. She was pure beauty. She had four white socks, the whitest blaze in the world down her face, and a chestnut mane, with blonde highlights. She was perfect in my eyes, but to my parents she was a runt. They told me that they were selling her, and of course I did not take well to that. I fought for her with everything I had and told my parents that I would train her. They still wanted to sell her and I wouldn't let them. I wanted her, and after about a week of bugging them and bugging them, I got her.
I trained her as a yearling and she finished all of her training around 3 years old. She was a very high-strung Arabian and my parents thought I couldn't handle her. I was determined to show my parents that she wasn't too much for me. I was already barrel racing for about 2 years or so, and I knew I could handle her. I knew I could. I trained with her for about 3 months until her first show.
My father didn't want me to show, but I was 12 years old. My father still saw me as his little girl. He, being his overly protective self, did not want me to get hurt. I didn't listen to him. I was going to show whether he liked it or not. I was going to show him that me and her were a team, and they better learn to like her. I showed her the first weekend in June, 2009. She was nervous, so I decided to run Dude in barrels. Her and Dude had that brother-sister bond like me and my brother, they were best friends. I only showed her in a novice walk-trot class. It was a county show and we are the only ones with pure bread Arabians in miles, Gigi and I were nervous, but I wouldn't let her know how nervous I was. I would let her know that I was confident, and I knew we were going to win! Nothing could stand in our way. I ended up winning that show against all the quarter horses. My parents let me keep Gigi. I decided not to show her much since she was so high strung, so for the rest of that year I just used her as a trail horse.
I had ridden her about 3 times a week, every week. In January, 2010 I started showing her about once per month. The last show I showed her in was in August. We did fairly well, but not as well as I would have planned. That night I came home from the show with my father and we decided to calm her down and go for a trail ride. He was riding my roping horse, even though he doesn't like roping, and I was riding Gigi. We rode through my summer pastures, which we call the bottom ground. We rode around for about an hour until I decided she had calmed down enough that we could take her back. My brother, who was notoriously forgetful, forgot to hang up our electric fence latch and it was just laying on the ground. Even though it was not running, he is still not supposed to lay it on the ground. My father and I were just getting back and his exact words at this moment were,
"That was a nice ride, we really didn't have any problems." He spoke too soon.
I walked through the gate and Gigi stepped on the wire that my brother had left on the ground. She started prancing to try and get out of it, which only made it worse. I couldn't get off without getting wrapped up in it my self. That is when she took off. Full gallop, straight towards the railing of the fence. She intended to flee to the gravel road, but the electric fence was in the way and she didn't see it. She went through it and tripped herself and we both landed on the gravel road, with her crushing my leg. She then jumped up and ran all around, running through the fence multiple other times. I grabbed my rope off of the ground and I knew what I needed to do. I yelled at my dad to get off Dude, and I hopped on, hoping that I could catch Gigi before she got to the highway. Thankfully Dude knew that this was a situation he could not act up on. We ended up galloping along side her, and Dude was ready for me to throw the rope onto her. He lowered his neck, looked at her, and drove forward, waiting. The only problem was that I never had roped a horse before. Only cattle. I still threw the rope and managed to get the loop around her neck.
That was a bad day, and with all the adrenaline rush I hadn't even noticed that I broke my leg. My leg ended up needing 4 pins, 2 screws, and 2 hours in surgery. Gigi was fine, except for a torn tendon and lots of minor wounds. She healed over the course of a year. It took a lot for her to get used to me again. I couldn't even ride at all for a year so I just worked on gaining her trust back. She still is not the same, at all. She can still remember that day. She will not go through that gate unless I walk her through it, and I don't think I will ever ride her through that gate again. It took a lot for me to even get back on her, but she was mine. I knew I could still handle her. My parents wanted to sell her for being a 'problem horse'. But I worked with her and she is almost better than ever. I ride her every week still, and we started to show again. |

I'm sorry but I would kill my brother if something like that happened. That is terrible! I would hate my brother for life.

Lovely horse! Sounds like an amazing, but quite painful, adventure! Glad you're both okay now.

Nice story. Wow! Seemed like you stayed really calm, which is the best thing you could do in that moment. But, when you said you had broken your leg, I was so surprised that you just hopped on Dude and went! That's really cool. (:
