In continuation of “The Apple Grove”
------------------------------------------------
Summary: In the past year, Jenifer, the rancher’s only daughter, and Luke, the stable hand on her father’s ranch have grown closer to each other but farther and farther from the strict rules of Jenifer’s father. After leaving the ranch on their own and almost loosing their lives to the Glasswater Falls, they were banned from seeing each other. But that didn’t stop Jenifer. She snuck out of her room to see Luke and the two of them have been seeing each other secretly for the past few weeks.
------------------------------------------------
Jenifer raced through the thick prairie grass, the warm Earth thumping against her bare feet. The soft tassels of the grass brushed against her sun kissed skin. Her radiant, chestnut curls swayed back and forth as she whipped her head back, checking her path for any followers. She looked ahead of her, the bright rays of sunlight bouncing off her freckles and igniting her hair with color. Jenifer smiled to herself and laughed with pure joy. Lying loose and crooked on top of her pretty head was a faded, worn cowboy hat. She reached up to adjust it as she sped through the prairie carelessly.
After the girl ran a tall, shaggy, handsome boy. His skin was tanned and burned from hours in the sun. His arms were swelled with muscle from hours of hard work. His jeans were faded and worn from hours of riding. He chased Jenifer playfully, catching up to her gradually. He reached out, wrapping an arm around the girl’s waist and pulling her to a stop in front of him.
“Luke!” Jenifer screamed in surprise. She kicked her feet in protest, giggling uncontrollably. Luke swung her around and set her down beside him, gazing down at her beautifully sculpted face in the shade of the hat. Jenifer held her hands firm against her head, holding onto the hat tightly.
“Oh, you look better in it anyway.” Luke smiled, knocking the hat down over her eyes.
Jenifer blushed and tipped the hat up. She gazed with a warm smile of bright white teeth and swept a dark curl away from her face. She was so bright and full of joy she could hardly contain it. Jenifer twirled around Luke, holding her arms out from her sides and letting her hair fly outwards as she tipped her head back. She slowly came to a stop and let herself fall into the grass softly.
Luke sat down beside her, sighing contently. There was a long, peaceful pause and then Jenifer’s voice. “I hear white roses are a sign of farewell.” she said with a funny smirk as she twirled a wild white rose between her fingers. “Farewell, Luke.” she laughed as she raced towards her horse competitively.
“Oh, I see how it is.” he responded confidently and jumped to his feet, heading for his horse. Luke smiled to himself and sprinted after her, vaulting onto Garth’s back.
Jenifer was the first to the stables, zipping around the corner and slowing Azure to a brisk trot as she got closer to the barn. She slid off of Azure’s back gracefully and landing with a confident smile. “I won!” she laughed. Jenifer smiled to herself and took Azure’s reins, heading for the barn and laughing as she went.
Suddenly as she turned the corner, a still body appeared in the alley. Jenifer’s smile drained from her face. Chills shot up her spine. She dropped Azure’s reins In the alley and sprinted to the body, her heart slowing and stopping with a thud. “Oh, god.” she said under her breath. “Daddy,” she whispered.
Jenifer’s breathing sped up, her heart started again, her eyes widened, her thoughts scattered everywhere at once, and she started to shake uncontrollably. She laid a small, delicate hand over the face and withdrew quickly. It was cold, dull, and lifeless. “Someone help!” her voice cracked like a knife, sharp and sudden. Her eye brows creased, a tear dribbled down her cheek. “No, no, no… Oh, god…” she repeated under her breath. “Daddy!” she shrieked. Her fingers felt numb, her heart beat violently in her chest until she was sure it would explode. “Help!” Jenifer choked out, her words slurring into tears.
Luke heard Jenifer’s voice once he entered the stable grounds. Something is not right, he thought. Is she hurt? Is Azure hurt? He slid off his tall horse, and landed in a sprint for the barn. He rounded the corner and raced into the barn alley. He took in the scene, his mind going a mile a minute. He struggled to find his voice. “Jen…. What’s going on?” he said with an uneven voice.
Jenifer looked up with a pained expression. Her eyes were red with tears and her face displayed pure anger and grief. She stumbled into Luke’s arms and screamed in pain. She pressed her face tightly against his chest and muffled out her cries. Tears flowed from her eyes uncontrollably.
A thin, pale, frail figure appeared on the other side of the alley. It was Jenifer’s mother. She looked like she had seen a ghost. Her face went white and her eyes widened with fear. “James,” she whispered softly, covering her mouth with a small, fragile hand. She staggered over to the lifeless body and dropped to her knees, touching the face gently. Her eyes went to Luke and Jenifer, bringing up tears. |
