A tall, lean man stepped out of the truck. A dark, worn boot hit the gravel. A strong, dark arm reached out and shut the door. A messy head of dark blonde hair appeared from behind the door. He stepped forward, staring back at Jenifer… waiting for something.
Jenifer watched, slowly she began to recognize the man. Her heart skid to a stop then jump-started at a racing pace. Jenifer’s body felt suddenly hot. Her metallic blue eyes widened and her arms opened. “Luke,” she cried, before hitting his body in a long-awaited embrace. She swung from his shoulders, gripping him from around the neck and bursting into tears of joy.
Luke squeezed Jenifer tightly then pulled back to stare at her. When he looked into those bright, hopeful eyes he couldn’t seem to find a word to say. With everything left a mystery, with all the questions, answers, and catching up to do… not a word was said. Jenifer giggled and hugged him again, taking it all in once more. She pulled back, holding his arms and staring with disbelief. She shook her dark curls and sighed.
“Why did you come back?” she asked, not sure where to start.
Luke let go of her arms and stretched slightly. He searched for the right words. “I realized I was missing my other half.” he answered after a long pause.
Jenifer’s face lit up with joy. “And it took you that long to realize it?” she asked, playfully hitting his stomach with her wrist.
Luke cracked a smile, starting up a roar of laughter. “I guess I needed loose you in order to realize what I had.” he answered with a warm grin.
“I guess I relied on you more than I thought…” Jenifer admitted. “You have no idea how hard it was to pull this place together on my own.” she met his warm, forgiving eyes.
“I know… I should have stayed; I should have been there for you when you needed me the most.” Luke said, tearing his eyes away.
“But you were,” Jenifer answered, stepping in front of him and catching his gaze with innocence in her eyes.
Luke smiled and touched her shoulder.
Jenifer beamed; she had waited months to enjoy this feeling again. She rose onto her toes, to meet his eyes then finally she planted long awaited kiss on his cheek. Luke looked at her in surprise and kept his eyes locked on hers as they started for the house. Jenifer’s face was bright, happier than she had been in a long time. She could hardly contain her joy. As she reached for the screen door and stepped inside, Luke stayed outside and took a quick glance around the ranch, taking it in.
A loud, sudden voice greeted Jenifer the moment she was inside. “What have I told you about kissing boys after dark, Jenny?” her mother nagged. “I’m going to stop hiring male ranch hands if you don’t shape up. Who is it this time?” she asked with a hand on her hip and a dish rag in the other. Jenifer’s smile faded and she turned towards the door as Luke stepped inside. There was a long silence and exchange of looks between Jenifer and Luke. “Oh…. well.” her mother mumbled. “Come inside, come.” She waved them in and quickly wiped down the small, round table in the kitchen.
Luke took a seat after Jenifer and looked at her mother like a boy in the principal’s office. Jenifer shot him a nervous look, and then looked to her mother. “Mom, can he stay?” she pleaded.
She looked at Jenifer in surprise, “Yes, of course!” she answered, starting up a sigh of reliefs between Jenifer and Luke. “He will work, right?”
Luke laughed and adjusted in his seat more comfortably, “Yes, of course.” he replied, glancing over at Jenifer who looked back reassuringly.
“Good.” her mother stated with a satisfied smile. “You start tomorrow, so scram.” And with that, she focused her attention on cleaning the dishes, humming to herself.
Jenifer looked from her mother to Luke and giggled. Luke shot her a thankful smile, stood, and headed for the door. He nodded to Jenifer and stepped outside, with a simple, “Night.”
Jenifer was left in the kitchen, feeling overwhelmingly thankful and relieved. She started to think that all this time, being strong and moving on, was finally paying off for her. She looked back to the table and noticed for the first time, a delicate white rose in the bouquet which was carefully put together and arranged in a vase by her mother each day. Jenifer reached a small, dainty finger to the rose and plucked it. She twirled it and gazed at it admiringly before standing and rushing to her mother with a hug.
“Jenny, I’m trying to do the dishes,” she replied. But Jenifer simply kissed her mother’s cheek and danced over to the staircase with a giddy smile.
“Goodnight Mother!” Jenifer replied before swinging around the railing and gliding up the stairs to her room.
Two weeks later, Luke put his best foot forward and proposed to Jenifer. With a beautiful diamond around her finger, she agreed and together they ran Glasswater Ranch in a mix of perfect harmony of personalities, love for each other, and passion for horses. And of course, on the day of their wedding, Jenifer wore a white dress and held in her hands a bouquet of wild white roses. |
