My Horse Dakota Put Down For Falling
 By Faith forever   •   6th May 2012   •   3,860 views   •   17 comments
Dakota was a 20 year old rescue horse we purchased. When we got Dakota he was so skinny that the vet wanted to put him down right away to end the suffering. We said no! We wanted a chance to see if we could get him to gain weight. Over the next few days we worked with him and day by day he started filling in. We had the vet out a few times during this process and it was also discovered that Dakota had cancer of the bladder, and if that wasn't enough, he suffered from an episode of colic shortly afterwards.

Unfortunately, Dakota soon went down at our farm. He had a neurological disease and couldn't stand up without help. He was going in circles trying to keep himself up, but fell into a chicken coop and made the roosting boxes fall. When the vet arrived he made Dakota gallop and trot.

My Horse Dakota

But Dakota seemed fine.

Later that day we let out Dakotas beloved mare Cerria to get some exercise. Unfortunately, Dakota fell again and again galloping after Cerria. The vet advise us it would just be better for Dakota to be put down. With great apprehension, we agreed this would be best.

When led Dakota out of the pasture to the place where he was to be buried. Cerria went crazy and tried to follow him through the gate. It was like she knew something was wrong and was trying to stop it! When Dakota got into the field near the burial spot he once again fell down on his own. When the vet showed up he tried his best to get up.

It was almost like he was saying "I'm ok! I can walk, see!".

The vet injected him and after a few seconds picked up his head. It was limp. The vet then listened for a heart beat... Dakota was gone. The vet hugged my Grandma and said he was sorry for the loss. We didnt cry for only one reason. Dakota would be happier in heaven with the wind in his mane. Dakota will forever be in our hearts and is forever loved.

Such an unfortunate story. Neurological diseases are hard: not all scars are visible.

You said before he died of something else. And what kind of vet makes a horse 'gallop' when it can't even stand up, especially after the horse had just fallen into a chicken coup.... Again, I'm doubting this vets credibility. Why didn't you guys have him away from things he could run into? Like a chicken coup.

I hate to be rude, but what sane horse owner allows their horse to gallop and trot after falling? And you seriously put him out in the field with after horses, where he would gallop after them, after you knew he had been down?!

I'm sorry for your loss, but you gave him a great life. Everyone who is critiquing her, this is a sensitive time. I know how it feels and someone telling you that you need a better vet is not going to improve the situation. Have a heart. Like Que Sara said, this is a great tribute, Rest In Peace Dakota.

Terribly sad, but be reassured you tried all that you could, and the falls could have caused him more injury or harm and therefore pain in the long run. Sorry for your loss.

So sad :'(
Like Dark Star and Makki have pointed out, I do think you need a new vet, however the article was a very good tribute to him. RIP Dakota.
