Heaven's Destiny

Heaven's DestinyI looked out into that big green field watching Piano and Arrow gallop across it. Their strong legs pumping with power, their manes flying in the blowing wind, and their whinnies filling my ears. I had a smile from ear to ear and I felt like nothing could ruin this day. As I sat on the porch I heard a big 'crash' coming from the kitchen. I walked into the house slowly, and quietly. As I walked into the kitchen I saw a figure bent over the kitchen table and a figure throwing dishes at the wall. Every time a dish hit the wall with a 'thud' the figure at the table jumped. I looked a bit closer and recognized the person at the table....It was my mother! My father was the one throwing the dishes! I stood there in astonishment as my dad threw our best dish yet. It was mom's favourite; it had a nice blue cross in the center and blue swirls around the rim. My father turned towards the door and saw me. He dropped the dish on the floor. I felt a small tear come down my face. He reached his hand out to wipe the tear away, but I jerked back and ran to my room.

Later that night I heard a soft knock on my door. I looked up from the book I was reading and saw my mother. She was dressed in her nice clothes and I could tell she was leaving for work.

"I'm sorry you had to see that Natalie." She apologized sweetly. She wiped the tears from my wet cheek. Her hand was so soft and smooth. "What time will you be home Mom?" I asked. She shrugged and said "I will be back when I get back." I shook my head and sighed. My mother sighed too and said "Well, you better put Piano and Arrow in their stalls." I nodded and stood stretching a bit. I yawned and walked out of the room. Once I was down stairs and out the back door I grabbed the lead ropes from the porch swing that was swaying in the wind as if there were a ghost moving it. I bolted for the pasture and whistled for Piano and Arrow. They came up in unison and I hooked them both to their lead ropes. I walked them to the stable and put them in their stalls. First I took off Piano's halter and gave him a carrot. Then I went to Arrow's stall, took off his halter and gave him an apple.

When I walked into the house Dad and Mother were shouting at each other again. I couldn't bare it any longer, so I ran to my room. There I shoved in my ear buds and started listening to my ipod. I heard a car start and saw my mother pull out of the driveway. I sighed and lay back down on my bed. I soon fell into a deep sleep. When I awoke that morning I heard a ton a noise coming from down stairs. I rubbed my eyes as I waked down the stairs. When I got to the living room my father was pacing back and forth with a police officer sitting on the couch. I looked at my dad curiously and asked "Whats wrong Dad?" Dad turned to me, his eyes were red and puffy. I knew by the expression on his face that something had happened. He came closer to me and put a hand on my shoulder. I jerked away like I had last night. "What happened?!" I asked sternly. He sighed and replied

"It's your mother... she was in a car crash, she, she, she past away."

I looked at my father in disbelief. "What do you mean?" I asked, feeling like I had been punched in the stomach. "She's gone. She isn't coming back... ever." The officer said, without a a tiny bit of sympathy. I glared at him and said with a little more attitude than I attended. "I wasn't talking to you sir." With tears running down my face I tried to give him a dirty look, but it didn't turn out that good. The office looked at me in surprise. "Little lady, I would suggest that you don't talk like that to me." He said calmly. I rolled my eyes and ran back to my room feeling betrayed and lonely.

Two Years Later
It was two years after my mother died and I just lay around the house. I walked outside and whistled for Piano and Arrow. They came up good and jolly. I smiled seeing that they were happy. Piano nudged my arm and searched me for carrots. I laughed and pulled a carrot from behind my back. Piano stared at it for a minute in amazement, then finally took it out of my hand. Arrow looked at me with his dreamy eyes and I pulled an apple out for him. They both ate their treats greedily and when they finished looked at me for more. I shrugged and said "I have no more guys." Piano snorted and stalked away with a flick of his tail. Arrow looked at me and I knew he wanted to go for a ride. I sighed and walked to the barn. I got Arrow's tack and put it on him in the pasture. When it was all on I swung on his back and rode all the way to the far end of the pasture. I knew if I went this way my father wouldn't see me leave the ranch.

We got to the gate and I opened it from Arrow's back. We rode through and closed it behind us. We rode at a trot down the trail and over to the old ranch house where we previously lived. I tied Arrow to a tree and walked into the house. I ran my fingers over Mother's antiques and rubbed my fingers together to get the dust off. I sighed and felt a small tear fall onto the floor. I walked up the stairs to my old room.

It seemed so big and empty.

I felt like the only person in the world at the very moment. I walked out of my room and back down the stairs. I walked into the living room and remembered that awful and life changing day.

I stood there like a statue staring at the room as if I was in a trance. I shook my head and brought myself back to reality. I walked out of the house and untied Arrow. I swung onto his back once more and galloped him towards town. When we hit the dirt road I slowed to a trot. Arrow's hooves made a clicking noise as we padded down the road. When we finally reached our small town I took a deep breath, it had been so long since I had been here. I slowed Arrow to a walk as we neared a small store. I tied Arrow to a pole and walked inside. I saw my dear friends Faith and Kyla. As I walked over to them they took a long look at me and smiled, then rushed over and gave me a strong hug. "I'm so sorry to hear about your mom." Faith whispered sympathetically. Kyla elbowed her in the stomach and apologized. I attempted to smile, but I looked pretty dumb.

I looked at the ground longing for an answer to my desperation. Kyla put her hand on my shoulder and said "It's going to be ok Nat. You have us to help you along the way, and if you just need to talk, call me." I smiled and walked around the store and got some plaid shirts, jeans, and a new pair of boots. I walked out the door and untied Arrow. I lifted myself onto his back and cantered back to the barn. Once we got there I removed his tack and let him out in the pasture. He ran gracefully to Piano, who was jealous that he didn't get to go. I laughed at my dear boys and walked into the house and hid my new clothes under my bed, then walked into the kitchen for dinner. My father looked sternly at me and asked where I have been. I rolled my eyes and replied "I took a ride around the pasture on Arrow." Father looked confused. "Arrow?" I closed my eyes. "Follow... the... arrow." I said slowly. I could tell he finally got it and asked "Is that all?" I nodded and sat at the table. "Whats for dinner?" I asked. He looked at me with a sly smile and said "Mystery meat and potatoes." I made a disgusted face and stood up. "That's disgusting!" I exclaimed. I ran to my room and opened a drawer full of food. I took out a biscuit and heated it up in the microwave. I ate it silently and then went to sleep,

When I awoke that morning everything seemed normal. When I walked down the stairs it was the same old same old. When I got outside and walked to the gate and whistled for the boys it got weird. Piano was the only one who came to me. I whistled once more and still there was no Arrow. I walked into the pasture and swung onto Piano's back. I galloped all around the pasture and went back to the front gate. I swung off and walked into the house. I ran to my dad and screamed

"Where is Arrow?!"

My dad gave me that sly smile again and said "He is somewhere with a good family." I clenched my fists and jaw and yelled "Why would you do that?!" He threw my new stuff at me and said "When you lie to me I am going to do stuff to get back at you! Now go to your room you little brat!" I screamed and pounded up the stairs. I shoved my head in my pillow and cried.

Later that night
I went to my closet and got my suitcase, packed my clothes and walked quickly but quietly down the stairs. I got in my truck and hooked up the trailer. I put Piano in the trailer and quietly closed the door behind him and headed to our old home. I walked in and took some of my mother's things. One thing that I took was her church gown. It was old fashioned, but beautiful in it's own way. My fingers traced the thin outline of a flower. I folded it then put it in my bag. I ran to the truck and drove off towards Denver, Colorado to stay at my grandparents house. I knew by morning my father would be sitting in their kitchen looking at me with a look of disappointment.

When I awoke that morning, just as I assumed, my father was sitting in the dinning room eating breakfast. I closed my eyes knowing that when I got home it would be the end of me. I walked slowly to my truck after breakfast to find my stuff and Piano in the trailer already. I sighed and got in. I buckled up and turned my radio up almost all the way. I jammed out to my Adele CD most the way then changed it to some country. I pulled into our long driveway wondering what would happen to me and Piano when we got home. I parked my truck under our big oak tree I had always loved to sit under as a child. I looked up at the old branches and climbed to the second branch that was about 10 feet off the ground. I stayed up there until I saw my father's beat up 1999 ford truck pull in. I hung upside down from the branch as he walked up trying to lighten the mood. "Boo!" I said with a crooked smile. My father looked at me with irritation and walked into the house.

I sighed and hopped down from the tree. I walked into the huge house and sat in my chair. I waited for my lecture about running away. I sighed as he began. It lasted almost an hour. Then he asked me "Do you want me to get rid of yet another one of your horses?" My eyes filled up with tears thinking about it. "NO! Whatever you do, do to me not to my horses! Do you know how much it hurts to loose the only thing that makes you happy? The only thing that lets me know that tomorrow when you wake everything won't be so bad?" I saw my dad's face turn completely red. His eyes were becoming red and puffy like the day my mother died. I sighed as I walked over to him. I put my head on his shoulder and said "I love you Daddy." He smiled and I felt a tear fall on my face.

I walked into the kitchen and made some dinner for the both of us. At dinner we didn't say a word to each other and it kind of bothered me. Right as I finished I stood and walked to the pasture. I whistled and Piano came rushing up. He was acting really strange for some reason. He bolted into the woods and all that was left was a trail of dust. I jumped the fence and ran after him. Of course he was faster than me, but I tried my hardest to close the gap. I finally found him by the gate and he had terror in his eyes. I ran over and hugged him tightly. He moved quickly and I fell to the ground with a 'thud'.

He bolted away once again and I sat on the ground watching him. I finally stood and limped after my boy. I found him once again, but this time he was by a little foal. She was a dappled grey thoroughbred. I looked at Piano and he looked at me. The poor foal was stuck in the neighbour's barbed wire fencing! My blood boiled at the sight and I ran over to help. I got her out finally and called the vet. The vet treated her leg and put her in Arrow's stall. My father had left to go to the store and came back with a trailer. I looked at him curiously as he opened the trailer door.

I saw my dear Arrow! I squealed and jumped up and down. Arrow was put in his stall with the foal whom he loved very much.

A month later the foal was in healthy shape. She is in training and I named her Native Dancer. Native, Piano, and Arrow always run around me when I walked into the pasture. I have started my own business for homeless animals called Second Chance ASPCA. Though I'm only 18, I have accomplished a lot. Native is the star of my life and my model. Piano is my boy, I would marry him if I could. Arrow is my hero, always setting a good example. I have a simple life and I like it that way. My life is like Heaven's Destiny.
