My Suge Sally Girl
|
|
At the age of 9 I received the best horse I will ever have. She was a small , skinny 20 year old bay Quarter Horse mare. Her registered name was Suge Sally Girl, but we all called her Sally for short. I will tell you when I first got her she wasn't the most beautiful things in the world but I loved her. A love at first sight you could say.
My sister had Sally for about two years before I did. When my Quarter Pony died Sally was passed down to me. I didn't expect such kindness from my sister, seeing that she loved Sally oh so dearly. My sister told me "I think you are ready for a challenge.Sally won't be as easy to ride as your old Quarter Pony. I don't think you will be able to handle her but I'm losing interest in riding horses.I don't want this amazing horse going to waste.", with that my sister handed me the lead shank and lead me to the barn that held this amazing horse.
As soon as I got into the stall Sally jumped. My sister said I should spend about and hour with her so she could get used to me. I did exactly that. I grabbed the grooming kit hanging on the stall door and groomed Sally for the longest time. While I was grooming her I sang and talked to her. I basically gave her my whole life story as well. After about 2 hours I decided to saddle up Sally. I went into my Memaw's barn office and asked her to help me. She gladly did.
We put Sally on cross ties and saddled her up. I remember the excitement as I was walking into the tack room. I was just too excited that I was finally going to ride Sally. After trying 3 different girths on my saddle we had Sally ready to go. I hopped on her and Memaw led me to the arena. When we approached the gate my Memaw unclipped the lead shank and me and Sally walked on in.
My Memaw stayed close by the gate just in-case anything were to happen. I warmed Sally up by walking and trotting her around the arena 10 or more times. Then I started walking her through barrels and loping her. This is the way things went for the first two weeks of me riding Sally.
One day my Memaw felt that Sally and I were ready to try cutting.Sally was already a "Cutting Horse" as my Memaw called her. So my GrandPa Joe rounded up 10 head of calfs in the arena.GrandPa Joe hopped on his "Cutting Horse" Sundown and showed me how I would need to position my reins and how to sit etc.
When he was done he allowed me to try on Sally. I did exactly what he told me to do. I first picked out a calf ,pointed my toes outwards and pressed my feet down in the stirrups. I placed the reins right in front of the saddle horn and held on tight.
Apparently I didn't hold on tight enough because when Sally followed the calf I fell off. My Memaw and GrandP Joes rushed to my side. I was a little shocked and tears were going down my cheeks but I dusted off my Wrangler blue jeans and hopped back on for a second go.
The Second time I did much better. I held the calf out of the herd for a good while and managed not to fall off. This is what I did everyday. I never did get tired of it.
Sally and I started competing when I was 10 and she was 21.We competed in the events cutting, pole bending, and barrels. We were in playdays and some local rodeos. Sally was a bit old and we didn't always manage to get a first place ribbon or trophy but Sally and I enjoyed every second of it. I remember the last rodeo we had together.
My family moved farther away from my Memaw's house so I no longer could ride Sally everyday. One day when I got home from school I noticed a Bay horse in a field. The horse looked like Sally! I dropped my backpack and ran to the gate yelling "Sally , Sally , Sally !". Sally cantered up to the fence and I stroked her head and gave her kisses. I was so ecstatic that Sally ws moved to my house.
After about a week I started noticing Sally was coughing hard and I couldn't ride her for more than 5 minutes before she would start coughing and heaving so bad. Without any permission I called the local house vet and asked him to come check her out. He came and told me there was nothing wrong. I knew he was wrong seeing that there was also green/yellow snot coming out of her nose. I called my Memaw and asked her to come to the house. We were going to take Sally to the best vet that was 5 hours away. My Memaw said yes and we started out on our journey. At some times we would stop at a vacant lot or drive to the back of a quick stop and let Sally out to check on her.
After a long 5 hour drive we got to the vet's office and he examined Sally. He told us she had Emphysema.I didn't understand but my Memaw explained to me. Sally had to get shots and medication.I no longer could ride this horse because the Emphysema had gotten so bad.I was devastated.
We moved Sally back up to my Memaw's house so she could play with the other horses and for what was left of her life let it be happier. One day my Memaw went out on the porch with her cup of coffee. My other horse (and Sally's best friend) Rio would come to the gate of the pasture then head to the pond then back to the gate. He repeated this many times. My Memaw walked halfway to to the pond and saw Sally lying in the pond dead. I was heading to the Heart Doctor that day and didn't find out until the end of the day. That day I lost my absolute best friend. Sally stayed alive for another 5 miserable years of coughing and breathing hard and died at the age of 27.
My life hasn't been complete ever since. I don't ride horses much seeing that Sally is not the horse I will be riding upon. I knew Sally would have to pass someday but I hoped it would have been better way. Not taking a bath in the lake and next thing you know floating atop.
