My Sweet Victory - Part 4
|
|
The next morning I woke up at the crack of dawn. Victory was coming today. I had prepared his stall last night, the nearest one to the door, and had hidden a few treats in his feed bucket, ready for his arrival. I couldn’t wait to see that cheeky little Thoroughbred again! But this time, he would be mine.
I quickly got dressed into my riding pants, polo shirt and boots and stepped out into the misty world. The sweet scent of tack and horses from the barn, drifted across to where I was standing. Today was going to be great, I could just sense it. I wandered over to Victory’s empty stall and tried to picture him there, munching on his hay.
I glanced casually up at the clock. “7:30” I muttered. Victory would be coming in an hour and a half. I strode back to the house to wake my mom and dad. They always sleep until about 8:30, I have such lazy parents!
Finally, 9:00.
I heard the familiar sound of a horse truck; struggling down the bumpy track we call a “road”. I smiled; it’s always funny watching horse trucks come down the “road”. When they’re completely not expecting it; they crash into a huge bump. The truck slowed down and parked outside the barn. I could hear Victory inside; stomping the floor, restlessly. A man climbed out of the cab and stared at me in a funny way, “Are you,” he glanced at his clipboard, “Isabella Clovers,” I nodded at hearing my name, “Yes, I am.” He gave a weak smile, “Wanna get him out?” he asked me.
I headed round to the back of the truck and slowly pulled down the ramp. Victory was tied up in the corner. He was wearing his pale green rug and his dark black mane was braided.
“Its ok boy,” I whispered softly, edging into the horse truck, “Remember me?” I slowly grabbed hold of his pale blue halter and untied the lead rein. He nickered softly and sniffed me. I smiled, “Time to show you your new home,” I led him down the ramp and onto the path to the barn. He gazed around curiously at his surroundings, his ears pricked forward.
“He’s a real beauty,” the driver commented, “looks like a great horse,” I smiled, “Thanks,” I looked up at Victory, “He’s going to be the greatest race horse ever!” I beamed. I knew he probably wasn’t going to be the greatest race horse ever, but to me, he always would be.
The driver looked at Victory for a second, “Mmmm,” he climbed back into the cab, “Bye,” I didn’t reply or even watch as the driver braved it onto the bumpy track; I was too intently focused on Victory. I led the huge pale gray Thoroughbred down the path to the barn. His strides were long and smooth; I couldn’t wait to try him out.
I opened the barn door and we walked inside; the door to his stall was wide open, ready for him. He stepped into it confidently, me following him closely. As soon as he was inside, he started munching on his hay. I sighed; all of our horses seemed to be greedy. I carefully removed his rug and hung it on the stall door. When I turned around again he had attacked his hay and his food bucket was already half empty. I sighed, “Greedy boy,” I muttered. I took of his pale blue halter, hung it on the hook, and then turned around to watch Victory again.
Together, we would be champions. Together, we would be able to do anything. |

I'm genuinely in love with this story, it's so gripping! And that last line: "Together, we would be champions. Together, we would be able to do anything." It sticks with you, but also shows pure determination and hints at what might come. I can't wait for the next chapter every time I finish one!
