My Sweet Victory - Part 5

“Come on boy,” I led Victory out of his stall. He had been living here at Blue Creek for about a week now; he should’ve settled. He looked great all tacked up and immaculately groomed. I couldn’t wait to ride him!
I led him up to the block and stepped onto it. Boy, he looked big from up here. I slowly mounted Victory and noticed my mom watching. I smiled, “He’s Beautiful, isn’t he?” She smiled, “He sure is,” she beamed. I knew she wasn’t here to see how amazing me and Victory were. She was here to make sure I didn’t have another accident. I could tell.
I rode Victory up to the newly built race track. It had finally been finished about a week ago and I was raring to try it out. He snorted and pawed the ground impatiently as we stood on the track, bathing in the moment.
I smiled, “Ready?” I whispered.
He shook his mane in annoyance. Of course he was ready. I smiled and made sure my helmet was on properly.
I urged Victory onwards and he launched himself into a fast gallop. “Whoa!” I gave a gentle pull on the reins and he slowed slightly. I beamed happily as we raced along the track; dust flying everywhere, hooves thundering, hearts soaring. This was where I belonged.
After doing a full lap, we finally slowed to a gentle trot. I glanced over at my mom. She was staring at us; her eyes wide “Wow.” My heart swelled with pride and I gave Victory a long rein and a gentle pat, “Thanks! He’s amazing” I beamed. “You look perfect for each other.” She had just read my mind. Me and Victory seemed to just, click. He was my other half.
“Mom,” I began. “Yes Honey,” she walked over to me and Victory. “Dad was a jockey, wasn’t he?” My mom sighed, “Yes. Yes, he was.” she patted Victory’s sleek neck, “He didn’t want you to find out. I’m guessing you found his old stuff?” I nodded, “He fell off, right?” “I’m afraid so. That’s why he’s never mentioned it.” I nodded. That was exactly what I’d thought, “Was he good?” I stroked Victory and played with his silky black mane.
“Was he good?!” My mom seemed shocked, “He was amazing. His fall cost him. Had he not fallen, he would’ve gone on to qualify for the Triple Crown.” “Really?” “Do you think I would lie?” I shook my head, “I just can’t imagine him racing.”
My mom smiled, “You should’ve seen him,” she looked up at me and Victory, “You’re just like him,” she paused to think, “Eager and ready for whatever hits you. You were born to ride Bella, make the most of that gift.” I nodded and buried my head in Victory’s mane. “I’ve got to go and check on Penny and Ace,” she told me, “Keep training, you’re doing great.” I watched her as she headed over to the barn.
I smiled and looked at my Thoroughbred stallion, “Want to go on a trail ride? You’ve been so good,” I whispered to him softly. He nickered quietly and shook his mane. “Let’s go,” Together, we rode off the track and towards the valley and whatever might challenge us.
We were invincible, I and Victory, invincible. |

Still reading it and can't wait for more!
Only 1 problem - it's not overly realistic that a racing thoroughbred stallion would be quiet enough to go out on a trail ride by himself.... but that's just a minor detail :)
