I never knew what it felt like to experience the loss of a great equine friend until April 16, 2012. If a person has never experienced such loss, there are no words to describe it.
April 15, 2012
As any typical evening, I headed outside to do chores. I fed my 27 year old mare, Misty her feed before saddling Stormy up to go for a peaceful ride. It was growing dark and I was nearing the end of my ride when I began to hear Misty having a coughing fit, and not any regular one. She began pacing and lying down which led me to my first thought; colic or choking.
I raced in the house and insist we call the vet immediately; it was nothing funny to play around with. He said he would be there later that evening, but unfortunately he was unable to make it until morning. I rushed back outside and held Misty’s delicate head in my hands, looked into her loving eyes and repeated, “I love you, sweetheart. You’ll be just fine. I love you...”, stroking her mane. I was oblivious to the point, thinking there was nothing seriously wrong, figuring by tomorrow I’d wake up and the horrible nightmare would be over. But nothing could have prepared me for what was to come.

Unfortunately, I had to head to school in the morning, going on about two hours of sleep from a restless night, but I headed there open-minded since Misty had shown much better signs that morning. The day dragged on as if the clock I stared at was playing mind games with me.
When I arrived home I greeted my mom with a smile and asked, “How’s my girl doing now?” My mom looked back up at me with tears in her eyes and just shook her head ‘no’. That was the worst feeling I have ever experienced; it dawned on me... and it stung, it hurt, it shocked me, and it made my heart ache. Those next few hours I was in pure shock and disbelief.
Misty had passed away naturally in the afternoon. When the vet arrived, her heart rate was double a normal rate and then would slow to barely anything. The vet said we did nothing wrong and there was nothing that could have prevented it. It was just her time to go. She lived a long, healthy happy life to the age of 27.
I practically grew up on that mare’s back; I was blessed to have her in my life since I was just six. She showed me the ropes of riding, put up with my rookie mistakes, and most importantly taught me how to love, trust, and believe in your dreams

I also teared up when I read this. I think I still have a lump in my throat. I am sorry to hear that Misty passed. My good friend's horse, Oreo passed away from old age as well. I havn't ridden a horse since. It's very hard to deal with. If you ever need to talk you are more than welcome to message me.

It's an awful feeling to loose a horse, you have my condolences.
I remember the first time I lost a horse, I cried for days. You're right in saying nothing can prepare you for that feeling, it's horrible.
I think this is a beautiful tribute to her, she sounds like one of those horses who's worth their weight in gold.

When horse racing enthusiasts hear the words “Kentucky Derby 2008”, most think of the brilliant win by the all mighty Big Brown, rejoicing. Others weep; remembering a filly who gave it her all until her very last breaths. This is ...

I still remember the day I laid eyes on my girl as if it was yesterday. After selling out overly spunky Welsh Cob, most definitely not suited for a child, we had been looking for a quiet mare ever since.
A crisp autumn evening ...
