A Place For Us

One and a half months later Brielle glanced over at Ryder, a look of certainty shone in his beautiful blue eyes. “Think he’s ready?” She asked softly. The question was more if she was ready or not.

“You can get the lead line on him no problem now. So we might-as-well try don’t you think?” Ryder replied with another question.

Brielle’s lips curved into a small smile and she nodded, “I think he’s ready.” Stepping into the open stall she looked up at the seal brown stallion. “Hey, Phantom,” She cooed quietly. Her voice was soft, and soothing as she approached the horse. He arched his neck and stepped toward her, pawing at the ground. Brielle reached forward and clipped the lead onto his leather halter. “There we go.” She whispered, eyes gently. She leaned up slowly and stroked around the stallion’s dark eyes. He nickered quietly and rested his massive head on her shoulder. Brielle had gained his trust in the barn, but would he still trust in her outside of his stall? Her hazel eyes scanned over the horse’s body and she felt something catch in her throat. This horse looked exactly like Romeo had. The horse that almost tore her life away from her. Brielle was glad when the thoughts fleeted quickly and she stepped slowly ahead of Phantom. “We’re going to go for a little walk, okay boy?” She walked out of the stall. Eyes glued on how the stallion reacted. He pranced slightly and pinned his ears at Ryder before stumbling closer to Brielle. She watched as Phantom stumbled along beside her, as if he was afraid. Then again, he had never been out of his stall. No wonder he was so fat. He never got exercise. Rolling her eyes Brielle held onto his lead and walked along slowly beside him. She let Phantom inspect anything he wanted, she wanted him to know noting would hurt him. Her small hand wandered down his neck and stroked it gently. He snorted before lowering his head, letting it bob slightly as he walked along beside her. Brielle turned to look back at Ryder who walked a good distance behind her. Her eyes flittered over him before she turned back to face the direction in which she was walking. As they excited the barn Phantom lowered his head to the ground. Nibbling on fresh grass that sprouted out of the soft earth. “C’mon silly, you can investigate later.” Brielle promised the stallion. Her eyes twinkled as she thought of how much she had grown mentally in this last month. She spent more time in Phantom’s stall, and even went on short rides more often. Her panic attacks rarely happened anymore, and if they did they were short and barely noticeable. She still had those moments when memories ran through her mind as if they were haunting her and trying to scare the life out of her. Thankfully she had found a way to push them away. She simply thought of things she loved. Things like, Phantom, her mother, daisies, fresh air, Ryder.

Ryder?

Her brows furrowed at her thoughts. Ryder. He was not supposed to be in the list of things she loved. Swallowing hard she bit her lip. Why had she never thought of Blake? She rolled her eyes at her own ridiculous thoughts and looked back to Phantom. Her mind was now swirling with questions, she quickly shoved them away and looked back to Phantom. “That’s a good boy.” She cooed absentmindedly. She tried desperately to get the thought of Ryder to leave her mind. Yet it did not. As they reached the round pen she led the stallion in. Ryder followed and closed the large gate behind them. His golden hair was even lighter now that the sun naturally bleached it. They had been outdoors quite often now, seeing as the weather was so much warmer. “Stand in the middle with me Ryder.” Brielle told him, glad when he obeyed without question. He knew why she wanted him in the middle. That way Phantom would not be distracted if he was sitting on the fence. Ryder stood beside her, eyes on her as she unclipped Phantom’s lead line. A determined look sparkled in her eye and she stepped toward the horse. He stepped away and she swung the lead line. Causing him to shy and turn to the rail. She ran after him and was glad when he cantered against the rail. “Good boy.” She cooed as she continued to make him run. Each time he slowed she twirled the lead line causing him to speed up again. Finally she stopped, stepped back to her place beside Ryder she waited. Phantom threw his head before slowing to a slow trot. Brielle turned away from the stallion and began to walk slowly away from him. Biting her lip she stood waiting. She could no longer hear the thump of his hooves against the ground. Brielle’s breath caught when Phantom stepped up beside her, resting his head on her tiny shoulder. A smile spread across her face and she reached up, wrapping her arms around his slender neck. “That’s my boy.” She whispered, “Good boy.” She praised, rubbing his neck.

Ryder stepped up to her, a smile pasted across his perfectly sculpted face. Brielle looked up at him, a laugh bursting forth from her face. Ryder wrapped his strong arms around her waist and spun her around before placing her on the ground in front of him again. “I knew you could do it.” He said quietly, a smile still playing in his eyes. He leaned down closer to her, his blue eyes locked with hers. “I’ve wanted to do this since the moment I met you, Brielle.” He whispered before leaning closer, his face only inches from hers. Brielle could feel his hot breath on her face, a shiver ran up her spine and she felt goose bumps forming on her skin.
